Those Were the Days
Sandie Shaw Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Once upon a time there was a tavern
Where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we laughed away the hours
And dreamed of all the great things we would do

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days

Then the busy years went rushing by us
We lost our starry notions on the way
If by chance I'd see you in the tavern
We'd smile at one another and we'd say

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days

Just tonight I stood before the tavern
Nothing seemed the way it used to be
In the glass I saw a strange reflection
Was that lonely woman really me

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.
La la la la
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days

Through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
Oh my friend we're older but no wiser
For in our hearts the dreams are still the same

Those were the days my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose
For we were young and sure to have our way.

La la la la
Those were the days, oh yes those were the days

Overall Meaning

Sandie Shaw's "Those Were The Days" is a nostalgic song about the passage of time and the memories of youth. The song is set in a tavern that used to be popular for drinking and dreaming. In the first verse, Sandie Shaw sings about the good times they had with friends and how they used to laugh and dream of all the great things they would do. In the chorus, she repeats how they thought those days would last forever, full of singing, dancing, and fighting for what they believed in.

In the second verse, she sings about how the busy years went by, and they lost their starry notions along the way. The nostalgia of the song is brought to the fore and how the good old days were the great days of their lives. The lyrics explain how, if they were to meet their friends from those days, they would reminisce about those good times, and say those were the days. In the last verse, Sandie Shaw sings about how she revisits the tavern and sees a strange reflection in the glass, a lonely woman who used to be young and full of life, and how the memories of her youth linger in her heart.

The song's message is a wistful plea for the simple joy of youth, the excitement that comes with endless possibilities, and the boundless optimism of youth. It reminds the listener to cherish memories of the past, seek happiness in the present, and cherish the hope that the future holds. The song is a poignant reminder that life is fleeting, and we should make the most of it by embracing all we have and living it to the fullest.

@amux patch So how were the Seventies? I am a 90s kid

amux patch

@Dare DevilIn seventies ,you saw changes in technology at a slow pace (like record player to cassette player) ,Fashion was 60/70s extension. You kept stuff from sixties into seventies (like furnitures ,home appliances etc..) fast forward to 21 first century ,replace 20th century assets with disposable items at faster rate.

Dare Devil

@amux patch So you are saying gramophone record players were still common in 60s and 70s? Were classical record labels still fashion? i saw VCR players in 90s and walkman.
