It Suits Me Well
Sandy Denny Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My name is Jan the gypsy
I travel the land.
There are no chains about me
I am me own man.
I can tell a fair old story which I'm sure ain't no surprise
Of the places I have been, oh,
And they ain't no lies.
I've never had a proper home,
Not one like yours is.
I've nearly always had a caravan
With horses.
And I know you won't believe me
Though it is the truth to tell
That the living it is hard, oh,
But it suits me well.

I am I traveler of the seas,
I am a sailor.
The ocean has been good to me,
She ain't no jailer.
I can tell a fair old story which I'm sure ain't no surprise
Of the places I have sailed, oh,
And they ain't no lies.

I've never had a garden,
Or a place with windows.
I stand upon the salty deck,
And feel the wind blow.
And I know you won't believe me
Though it is the truth to tell
That the living it is hard, oh,
But it suits me well.

My mother was a fire-eater,
'Fore she desert us.
So when I was only seven years old
I joined the circus.
And I can tell a fair old story which I'm sure ain't no surprise
Of the places we have played, oh,
And it ain't no lies.

I've never had no money,
And no hope to get none.
I can always get a penny,
When there is good reason.
And I know you won't believe me
Though it is the truth to tell

That the living it is hard, oh,
But it suits me well.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sandy Denny's song "It Suits Me Well" tell the story of a nomadic man named Jan the Gypsy. He describes himself as a traveler who has never had a proper home, but prefers the freedom of traveling to being tied down to one place. Jan recounts his experiences as a circus performer, a sailor, and a storyteller, emphasizing the hardships he has faced but also the joy he finds in his way of life. He emphasizes that while his life may seem difficult to others, it suits him well.

The song's lyrics can be seen as a celebration of the freedom and spontaneity that comes with a nomadic lifestyle, but also as a commentary on the struggles and sacrifices that such a life entails. Jan's mother was a fire-eater who abandoned him, leading him to join the circus at a young age. While he has faced poverty and uncertainty throughout his life, he values the ability to travel and experience new places over material possessions.

Overall, "It Suits Me Well" is a poignant reminder of the value of living life on one's own terms, of the possibility of finding joy in even the most challenging circumstances, and of the importance of freedom and mobility in a rapidly changing world.

I was 17 when I first heard Sandy’s voice. I was stopped in my tracks. I had never heard anything so beautiful. I was mesmerised. She is the perfect singer. So glad I saw her once live with Fairport in 1972. An angel. Xxx

I think I was 17 when I first heard her, too. I loved her music and had forgotten about it. So glad I remembered. I think I saw Fairport convention the same year you did. It’s pretty sad that I’m not sure. I saw so many bands back then they all kind of run together. I absolutely remember reading when she died. So sad. Incomparable voice. My favorite song is It’ll Take A Long, Long Time.

Exquisite. Sandy had the most beautiful delicate and sublime voice! My favorite English female singer of the ages. Period.

What can I say that has not already been said? Sandy's voice is without peer, then, or now. a treasure lost to time. Her singing provokes such deep emotion as to be almost supernatural. I miss her, everyday.

Just the greatest folk singer of all time ! It's a pity her private life didn't work out better than it did ...
