Late November
Sandy Denny Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The wine it was drunk, the ship it was sunk,
The shot it was dead, all the sorrows were drowned.
The birds they were clouds, the brides and the shrouds
And as we drew south the mist it came down.

The wooded ravine to the wandering stream,
The serpent he moved, but no-one would say.
The depths of the waters, the bridge which distraught us
And brought to me thoughts of the ill-fated day.

The temples were filled with the strangest of creatures
One played it by ear on the banks of the sea.
That one was found but the others they went under.
Oh the tears which are shed, they won't come from me.

The methods of madness, the pathos and the sadness,
God help you all, the insane and wise.
The black and the white, the darkness of the night,
I see only smoke from the chimneys arise.

The pilot he flew all across the sky and woke me.
He flew solo on the mercury sea.

The dream it came back, all about the tall brown people,
The sacred young herd on the phosphorus sand.

Overall Meaning

Sandy Denny's "Late November" is a complex and somewhat cryptic song that presents an array of images and metaphors that are open to multiple interpretations. The lyrics seem to depict a journey, perhaps a physical one, but also an emotional and spiritual one, through a landscape that is both haunting and beautiful, but also full of danger and tragedy. The opening lines, "The wine it was drunk, the ship it was sunk, The shot it was dead, all the sorrows were drowned.", suggest that the singer is trying to forget or escape from something painful, but at the same time acknowledging that there is no escaping from sorrow and tragedy. The birds being compared to clouds and the brides to shrouds further underlines the idea of fleeting and ephemeral beauty, and the inevitability of death and decay. The mist that comes down as they draw south could be seen as a metaphor for confusion, doubt or even depression, as the singer faces the challenges ahead.

As they move deeper into the landscape, they encounter more enigmatic and unsettling figures and situations, such as the serpent that moves but no one speaks of, the depths of the waters, and the ill-fated day that is evoked by the bridge. The temples filled with strange creatures and the musician playing by ear on the banks of the sea add to a sense of otherworldliness, and perhaps suggest that the singer is crossing over into a realm of the unknown or the supernatural. However, the "tears which are shed" are not the singer's own, suggesting a detachment or denial of empathy that is both intriguing and disturbing.

Here it is....late November 2023, and I happened to think of this tune, a favorite, by the late and much-loved Sandy Denny. Discovered her and Fairport thirteen years ago, and why it took so long to do that I will never know, but my life is all the better for it!

Remembering Sandy Denny born on January 6, 1947. She was an English singer-songwriter who was lead singer of the British folk rock band Fairport Convention. She has been described as "the pre-eminent British folk rock singer". After briefly working with the Strawbs, Denny joined Fairport Convention in 1968, remaining with them until 1969. She formed the short-lived band Fotheringay in 1970, before focusing on a solo career. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_Denny

Wow this song has been here TEN YEARS and never received a thumbs down. Proof of the genius talent of Sandy. This is one of her greatest masterpieces.

@Tuzotonic

There have been many amazing singers over the years but there is only one Sandy Denny.

@geavanommen2203

Sure. She's great.

@russs7574

She falls into my "voice of an angel" category.

@edwardmorris3453

Probably now because there's only so many women left named Sandy. But at one time that name (Sandra or some other longer form) proliferated birth records from the Isle of Wight to Perth, Australia and some of the likelihood of at least two having the last name Denny is that of all Sandys divided by all Dennys and I wouldn't stake my chapeau on your claim. Also, for the sake of precision, I assume you mean by "is" "was" or "has been". This assumption is warranted inasmuch as the Sandy Denny under consideration is no longer alive.

@musharrafdog

Drummer in this group really added to it--just heavy enough to emphasize the others.

@snowfiresunwind

Beautiful - and those guitars sound great!

@johngibbs799

Thank you. Lord, I got to see her perform live 5x.
