Take Me Away
Sandy Denny Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Such sweet love is so hard to find
Look around, these are troublesome times
The sun beats down on our hunger and thirst
It would soon all be over if we let it be worse

[Chorus]
Take me away, take me away
Take me away, take me away

If not for you how would I keep going
No one to be near, no good fortune to know
Take my hand, make me feel stronger
You're a man - progress is slow

[Chorus]

There will be rain clouds, for harvest to grow
We'll find the rain clouds, and the rivers will flow
Leave what is past, search for the future
Leave this black dream for it's high time to go

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

At face value, Sandy Denny's "Take Me Away" appears to be a love song. However, when one listens deeply to the lyrics, it becomes apparent that the songwriter is talking about the current state of affairs in the world. The first line, "Such sweet love is so hard to find," can be looked at as a reference to the struggles humanity is facing in finding love and acceptance for all people. Denny goes on to sing about "troublesome times" and how the brutality of the world is taking its toll on individuals.

Denny then talks about how "the sun beats down on our hunger and thirst," which could be a reference to global warming, a rising issue during the mid-70s when the song was released. She then sings, "It would soon all be over if we let it be worse," implying that if we do not start taking action to make a difference in the world, then we will not have a world to save.

The chorus of the song, "Take me away, take me away," can be interpreted as a desire to escape from the harsh reality of the world. The song then shifts to talking about the importance of having a partner to get through tough times. The song ends on a note of hope, encouraging listeners to leave the negative past behind and focus on the future.

This brings back so many memories. I bought this album before I moved into a yoga ashram. For the next three years, we were isolated from this kind of music. When I left, I returned to my parents' home, only to find out that she had died, and this was her last recording... there is something very spiritual about this tune, and highlighted the life of an incredible woman and singer.

TAKE ME AWAY, Never even knew this album existed. Beautiful. Sad & Upbeat at the same time. Way to young to die Sandy.
