The Lady
Sandy Denny Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The lady she had a silver tongue.
For to sing she said,
And maybe that's all.
Wait for the dawn and we will have that song.
When it ends it will seem
That we hear silence fall.

The lady she had a golden heart,
For to love, she said
And she did not lie.
Wait for the dawn and we'll watch for the sun.
As we turn it will seem
To arise in the sky.

We heard that song while watching the skies,
Oh the sound it rang
So clear through the cold.

Then silence fell and the sun did arise
On a beautiful morning of silver and gold.

Overall Meaning

The song "The Lady" by Sandy Denny is a powerful and evocative tribute to a remarkable woman. The lyrics are rich with imagery and symbolism, reflecting the lady's dual personality: her ability to sing and her capacity to love. In the first stanza, Denny describes the lady's "silver tongue," which suggests that she is skilled at communication and can use her words to enchant and inspire others. She promises to perform a song at dawn, which will be so beautiful that it will seem to leave silence in its wake.

In the second stanza, Denny shifts her focus to the lady's "golden heart," which symbolizes her capacity to love and to create connections with others. She again promises that at dawn, they will watch the sun rise and it will seem as if the lady's heart has caused the sun to appear in the sky. Combined with the previous image of the "silver tongue," Denny creates a portrait of a woman who is both creative and compassionate, able to captivate others with her words and her heart.

The final stanza is perhaps the most poignant, as Denny describes the experience of hearing the song while watching the sunrise. The sound of the song is so clear that it seems to cut through the cold and the darkness of the night. And when it ends, the silence is profound. But as the sun rises, it brings with it a sense of renewal, of hope and of beauty. The juxtaposition between the silence and the sound, between the darkness and the light, underscores the importance of the lady and the impact she has had on those around her.

I can't believe there are only 12 comments regarding this masterpiece. Surely this is one of the most ravishing songs ever written. This is up there with Schubert and Gershwin.

It's absolutely stunning. This and Nick Drake's The River Man are two masterpiece's of that particularly strong period of a folk music. And such a shame they both died so tragically, so young. And I just realised, it's the same string arranger, Harry Robinson. Beautiful delicate complementary work, doesn't overshadow the singer or the main accompaniment but lets it bloom and breathe.

Such a beautiful song, such a wonderful artist. She passed way too soon 😢

This has been one of my favorite songs for a long, long time. After this horrific election, I have been immersing myself in the BEAUTY that is Sandy Denny (Fairport, Fotheringay, Strawbs, etc...) - and right now, WE need this more than ever!

If you've ever heard the version she does on the recording of her last concert, in early 1978, it sounds as if, unknowlingly, she is singing her own epitaph(she died in April of that year).  They put the words "The Lady" on her tombstone, in fact.

Palden Tsultrim

Unspeakably poignant. I still weep for Sandy.

I bought 'The North Star Grassman and the Ravens' one dark rainy November, so the song Late November haunts me quite a bit as I'd broken up with a girlfriend. The album has grown as part of me over the years - seems to resonate more than ever.
