I am very impressed Sir! I got my first butterfly knife 43 years ago! My dad bought it for me when I was 14 or 15. That would have been around 1984 or 85, my father and I were at our hometown hardware store when I saw it in a display cabinet. It was stainless steel and with holes in the handle. I think it was around $25.00 or so. I knew what it was from a movie I had watched, but didn’t know how to use it or even where to get one, and bam….. here it was in a hardware store!? Anyway I taught myself how to use it. This actually took me back to some awesome memories! Thank you!

Story time: I was on the bus talking to my friend and we were playing some game they made up. I was asking how i was supposed to win, and they gave some long bs explanation. I asked "but if you die you lose?" and they said yes. I turned to a person we didn't know next to us and jokingly asked for a weapon. She whipped out a butterfly trainer and perfectly executed a whole bunch of tricks. Long story short, i came home from school able to open and close a butterfly knife that day.

If you are going to do that. then get a Bali-Comb (in Australia). The teachers don't care as long as it isn't a weapon. So you could probably get away with a trainer. But do i really want my parents to know i brought a trainer to school? Also it depends on where you live. if you live in the Philippines then it is a no go.

"After you learn them" I can't express enough how true this is!!

Learning how to flip and spin a butterfly knife at the start can be sooo painful, sometimes you mess up at the start of the trick, or right at the end, and it can really be painful.
In the end, though, it's always so satisfying to fully complete and know a trick, and in my opinion, that's worth it.

Pro tip if you decide to learn more tricks, where you but your hands makes a big difference in momentum tricks like y2k. For example when in that reverse pen grip, if your fingers are closer to the latch, it will not want to stick to your finger, however if you hold closer to the tang of the blade in that same position, it's going to make a tighter rotation around your finger. Also congrats on getting into the hobby and learning. It's very addicting, and the feel of learning, and landing new tricks is incredible. Hope you continue learning this one. I recommend learning the half twirl next, or behind the 8ball

I learned the Helix before Behind the eight ball as well but for someone wanting to try I´d actually recommend Behind the Eight Ball since it´s way more useful in other tricks.

Btw you hold the knife like a pen in Y2K... very close to the top.

Its wild that I followed the exact same process as this mans just starting a couple weeks ago. Saw some cool videos, saw a helix, and knew I wanted to learn it. So I got a trainer, learned regular opening and horizontal opening with the wrist pass, moved to the y2k, combined it with wrist pass for the zen rollover, and and still trying to get good at the helix. By now my cheap trainer has been dropped so much that the pins are loose and its getting hard to keep everything buttery smooth, but I will learn the helix until I can do it comfortably! Good job with the video and quality edits bro!

It took me like 5 mins on how to do the basic open and close maneuver with the butterfly knife. My biggest fear was that I was gonna drop it on the tile and break my knife so I did it over my bed and I pretty much instantly mastered it. Now I can whip it around wherever and whenever and I'm not scared of dropping it or having it fly out of my hand. Some tips I'd recommend for the newer guys are 1) get a fake blade. They sell butterfly knives that are just like the original knife but there is no blade so you can't cut yourself if you're doing a trick that involves using the blade handle or something. 2) flip your knife over a soft surface such as a thick carpet, your bed, grass, or sand. If you drop it on a marble, wood, or tile floor it could break either the floor or break your knife and if you want a butterfly knife that will last or flips nicely you're going to have to pay around $50-$60.
