Nocturne
Sans Seraph Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What can I say,
It's been so long.
Nothing to say
It's been so long.

Can you show me how to waiver
This science fiction curse?
Tonight I keep looking at the sky we used to talk about.
Silence is broken in pieces; I swear it was real,
I heard you say my name.
I wasn't sure,
I was half awake,
I was half asleep.

You've shown me how to love.
Will you please show me how to take it all back?

Can you show me how to waiver
This science fiction curse?
A moment of tragedy comes when I open up my eyes.

Where is my "one true love?"
Where is the promise we spoke of?
When does "forever" mean "to walk away"?

Where are you?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sans Seraph's song Nocturne talk about a longing for something that has been lost or left behind. The lines "What can I say/It's been so long/Nothing to say/It's been so long" convey a sense of emptiness and inability to express oneself after a significant period of time has passed. The next lines, "Can you show me how to waiver/This science fiction curse?" express a desire to break free from a perceived curse, possibly of feeling stuck in a stagnant or unfulfilling life.

The chorus of the song reflects on a memory of someone who was important, using the metaphor of looking at the sky they used to talk about. The mention of the silence being broken in pieces suggests that the memory is fragmented or incomplete. The singer hears their name, but isn't sure whether it was real or part of a dream.

The second verse pleads for guidance on how to love and how to undo past mistakes, asking "Will you please show me how to take it all back?" The final lines of the song express a sense of betrayal and disappointment, wondering where the promised forever has gone and where the loved one has disappeared to.

Overall, the song is a poignant reflection on lost time, lost love, and the longing for a way to move forward.

This is one of my favorite lost albums. It's sad Billy and the band never popped off, because this album and the Shun records were excellent. Thank you for posting this!

I was a kid when they recorded this. It was at my dads house. On the sound with the greatest of ease that sound in the beginning was me playing with my toys and in another room, it found it’s way onto the song. Used to hand out CD’s with them. Great album.

Thanks Chris for the great news. I have bought the cd directly for them in 2006, and shipped to Italy. Really I loved and love it too. Many memories...it's emotional. Do you know if they recorded other albums??

Nathan Domino

@David Lever they made some demos and Billy recorded songs in a few other projects

I really wish they could find a way to get this album onto all of the streaming platforms. I've loved this album from day one.

Together with the Shun album one of my favourites for more than ten years. Thanks guys.

I drove up to Nashville to see their first ever show at the Exit/Inn. Got to meet the band and party at their house after the show. Great musicians and I actually have a CD they made themselves of this album.

If only the vocals weren't so overly passionate. They are kinda grinding to my ears. The music sounds fresh even after so many years.
