Santa Sabina are distinguished by their gothic rock lyrics and stage presence. Their music, however, is perhaps best described as a variant of progressive rock which borrows heavily from jazz.
At the end of the 1980s, Guerrero left her hometown of Guadalajara to attend the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City to pursue a career in theatre. There, she met Poncho Figueroa, Pablo Valero and Jacobo Leiberman, who at that time were members of a jazz group called "the Psicotrópicos". "The Psicotrópicos" agreed to provide music for a play written for Guerrero's theatre class based on Franz Kafka's "Amérika". As they worked together, they realized they had a strong artistic affinity. After the dissolution of the "Psicotrópicos", they decided to form a new rock band that reflected their artistic vision. Although the group's lineup has changed through the years (as in the case of Pablo Valero and Jacobo Leiberman), the sound of the group, has evolved but remains faithful to its initial course.
Their first albums, Santa Sabina (1992), Símbolos (1994) and Babel (1996) were released through the now-defunct Mexican record label Culebra Records, a local branch of BGM Ariola. Their following albums, Mar adentro en la sangre (2001) and Espiral (2003), were independent productions. In 1997, they also recorded an album of their "unplugged" performance for MTV Latinamerica called Santa Sabina Unplugged.
The band reformed briefly in 2010 when it became clear that this might be the last chance to have Rita perform as she was diagnosed with breast cancer and treatment failed. On the 11th March 2011 Rita passed away which left the band without a lead-singer. No information is available whether they will reform with another singer.
Humo Canción
Santa Sabina Lyrics

La vida nunca termina,
Tus pasos acarician la tierra.
Eres barro, palabra, tiempo.
Eres flor, mañana eres cielo.
Humo canción, alimenta el calor.
La niebla que brilla y alivia,
El fuego nos mira, nos quema.
Alma sabia en un cuerpo pequeño,
Eres voz, mañana eres sueño.
Humo canción, alimento de amor.
Devoras distancia y tiempo,
Tu voz que acaricia y duele.
Tan profunda tu magia heredada,
Eres sol, mañana eres fuego.
Humo canción, alimento de Dios.
Tu lenguaje, sonido de agua,
Es la tierra y el fuego quien habla.
Plenitud, sencillez y transparente,
Eres hoy, mañana y siempre.
The song "Humo Canción" by Santa Sabina is an intricate ode to the power of music and its many attributes. The lyrics use poetic language and powerful imagery to explore the many ways in which music affects us, from the way it can nourish us to the way it can feel like a spiritual force. The opening line, "Humo canción, alimento del sol" (Smoke song, food for the sun), is a metaphor that suggests that music is a vital force that feeds our souls, just as the sun is vital for life on Earth.
Throughout the song, the lyrics describe music in ways that reveal its many dimensions. For instance, the second verse describes music as a source of comfort: "La niebla que brilla y alivia, / El fuego nos mira, nos quema" (The shining and soothing fog, / The fire that watches and burns us). Here, music is depicted as offering both light and warmth, like a fire in the night that illuminates the darkness and provides solace. In the final verse, the lyrics suggest that music is a divine force: "Humo canción, alimento de Dios" (Smoke song, food of God). This image of music as a spiritual food is a powerful one, suggesting that music is something that can sustain us on many levels.

Un video muy conmovedor, con escenas del bautizo que recibieron en 2011 de parte de María Apolonia, la hija de María Sabina. en gratitud ellos ofrecieron un concierto en Huautla de Jiménez.
