The Game Of Love
Santana/Tina Turner Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Just what you want me to be
One kiss
And boom you're the only one for me
So please tell me
Why don't you come around no more?
'Cause right now
I'm crying outside the door of your candy store
It just takes a little bit of this, a little bit of that
It started with a kiss
Now we're up to bat
A little bit of laughs, a little bit of pain
I'm telling you my babe
It's all in the game of
Love is
Whatever you make it to be
Sunshine
Instead of this cold lonely sea
So please baby
Try and use me for what I'm good for
It ain't saying goodbye
It's knocking down the door of your candy store
It just takes a little bit of this, a little bit of that
It started with a kiss
Now we're up to bat
A little bit of laughs, a little bit of pain
I'm telling you baby
It's all in the game of love
It's all in this game of love
You roll me
Control me
Console me
Please hold me
You guide me
Divide me
Into me
So please tell me
Why don't you come around no more?
'Cause right now
I'm dying outside the door of your loving store
It just take a little bit of this, a little bit of that
It started with a kiss
Now we're up to bat
A little bit of laughs, a little bit of pain
I'm telling you my babe
It's all in the game of love
All in this game of love
It's all in the game of love
Let's play the game of love
Roll me
Control me
Please hold me
I'm out here on my own
On my own
The lyrics of Santana/Tina Turner's song The Game Of Love speak of the ups and downs of love and relationships. The singer pleads with their lover to tell them what they want from the relationship, and why they haven't been around as much lately. The singer is emotional and vulnerable, crying outside their lover's "candy store", wanting to be let back in. The chorus reassures us that love is what we make it, and that it can be as bright and warm as sunshine, if we choose to let it.
The second verse talks more about the game of love, how it can be a mix of happiness and pain, and that it's all just part of the "game". The lyrics suggest that it only takes a little bit of this and that to start the game, like a kiss, and then suddenly we're up to bat, meaning we're in the thick of it. The singer uses metaphors to describe their partner's hold on them, saying they roll, control, console, and divide them, but they still want to be held and guided.

Michelle's version: A person embarking on a romantic venture for the first or second time, still learning and understanding what love and passion is supposed to feel like. Someone who is willing to take a risk and jump headlong into their emotions because hey, why hold back? Sweet and flirty, but also warm and earnest.
Tina's version: A person who has lived long enough to know what good love is, and when a relationship is worth pursuing. A person who is sure of themselves and never doubts their own beauty and sensuality. Strong, yearning, and a passion that has only grown with years and is neverending.
I love both versions for a reason and this music will never die.

Exactly
@Porkcfish
It's what makes a great song: two artists can give great, but totally different, interpretations.

Tina's version tears me up every time. Her life, my life, people around the world. Sigh...

I think if I had to choose one, I'd choose Michelle's, but Tina's is very nice too. :) It's also probably because I grew up with the former. Both versions are great, from 2 great artists.
