Cocaine
Santana feat. Eric Clapton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you want to hang out, you've gotta take her out, cocaine
If you want to get down, down on the ground, cocaine

She don't lie, she don't lie, she don't lie
Cocaine

If you got bad news, you want to kick them blues, cocaine
When your day is done, and you want to run, cocaine

She don't lie, she don't lie, she don't lie
Cocaine

If your day is gone, and you want to ride on, cocaine
Don't forget this fact, you can't get it back, cocaine

She don't lie, she don't lie, she don't lie
Cocaine

She don't lie, she don't lie, she don't lie
Cocaine

Cocaine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Santana feat. Eric Clapton's song "Cocaine" are straightforward and unambiguous; they are about the drug cocaine and its effects. The song's lyrics describe the allure of the drug and how it can be used to help escape from problems or difficult situations. In the first verse, the lyrics suggest that if you want to impress or spend time with a woman, you need to have the means to acquire cocaine, implying that the drug is a status symbol. The second verse suggests that cocaine can help alleviate bad news, the blues, and general stress. The chorus reiterates the central message of the song: that cocaine has a powerful hold and can be irresistible to those who seek its effects.

The song's mention of cocaine was a reflection of the drug culture of the 70s and early 80s, which saw a rise in cocaine abuse. "Cocaine" was written by J.J. Cale and released in 1976. Cale had a long history with Eric Clapton, who covered several of his songs, including "After Midnight" and "Call Me the Breeze." Santana's version of "Cocaine" was a live performance recorded in 1986 at the Montreux Jazz Festival.
