In February 2009, she officially changed her stage name to Santigold as a result of infomercial jeweller Santo Gold threatening legal action against White and her label Downtown Records.
White was lead singer of the Philadelphia-based punk rock band Stiffed, but while in the band, she was offered a solo contract. Working with fellow Stiffed member John Hill as co-producer, she recorded her debut album, Santogold, which was released in April 2008. Upon the change of her stage name, her label Downtown Records issued this press release:
"Change the graffiti on the bathroom wall, get your tattoo fixed, get your T-shirt airbrushed and change the name on your year-end list: Santogold is now Santigold. She's not telling you why, that's just how it is."
Go!

And they want my station
Storm my winter palace
But they couldn't take it
All the way to Paris
Ride my reputation
Try to pull my status
But they couldn't fake it
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Trying to pull a full on, your gas won't go
Grande chicken on your ass oh no
Man lookin' for your ticket like let's all go
Buddy still I'm in it, but your gas won't go
When you look on, you look on, you're racin'
But I'm too gone, I'm too gone how that song go
When you get on, you get on your shaken
Man you took on, you took on, too much don't blow
Aww
People want my power
And they want my station
Storm my winter palace
But they couldn't take it
All the way to Paris
Ride my reputation
Try to pull my status
But they couldn't fake it
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Can I get a witness? The quo's so low
Everybody itchin' for a throne to throw
And you can be the widget to my turbo
Better sew your status
While the quo's so low
Do you forget the, forget the basics?
Want to go long, to go long
You must go slow
Trying to skip all, the skip all the bases
But your slippin', your sliding
Can't make it go
Aww
People want my power
And they want my station
Storm my winter palace
But they couldn't take it
All the way to Paris
Ride my reputation
Try to pull my status
But they couldn't fake it
How hard we fall
I'm another instrument to crash your
Crash your, crash your party
Oh, crash, crash, crash, crash
I'm another instrument to crash your
Crash your, crash your party
Ha, crash it
Ha, crash it
Ha, crash it
Ha, crash it
Ha, crash it
Crash it
People want my power
And they want my station
Storm my winter palace
But they couldn't take it
All the way to Paris
Ride my reputation
Try to pull my status
But they couldn't fake it
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
Ay, ay, ay, ay
In “Go!”, Santigold sings about the power and adulation that she has earned, which also brings along people wanting to take it from her. The verses are structured as a direct address to those who wish to take her station, with the refrain of “People want my power, and they want my station” being repeated throughout the song. In the chorus, Santigold sings about the rush of going fast and the temptation to speed up one’s ascent to success, but cautions that it’s important to remember the basics and take things slow.
The refrain of “People want my power, and they want my station” is a commentary on the thirst for power and success, and the lengths that some people will go to attain it. The winter palace and Paris references can be seen as analogies for the achievements Santigold has already made, both tangible and intangible. The lines “Trying to pull a full on, your gas won't go / Grande chicken on your ass, oh no” are seemingly nonsensical, but they can be interpreted as a way of saying that people who try to take what is not theirs won’t succeed. The song encourages listeners to be cautious when seeking success, and to not lose sight of the fundamentals in the quest for power.
