In February 2009, she officially changed her stage name to Santigold as a result of infomercial jeweller Santo Gold threatening legal action against White and her label Downtown Records.
White was lead singer of the Philadelphia-based punk rock band Stiffed, but while in the band, she was offered a solo contract. Working with fellow Stiffed member John Hill as co-producer, she recorded her debut album, Santogold, which was released in April 2008. Upon the change of her stage name, her label Downtown Records issued this press release:
"Change the graffiti on the bathroom wall, get your tattoo fixed, get your T-shirt airbrushed and change the name on your year-end list: Santogold is now Santigold. She's not telling you why, that's just how it is."

It's like we don't know where we been
That's it, boy, just state your case
You're just as wrong as you were then
One tough move throw your hands up
Say I don't make no rules
No one even knows I'm here
Now it's on you to man up
We're the keepers
While we sleep in America
Our house is burning down
Our house is burning
We're the keepers
While we sleep in America
Our house is burning down
Our house is burning
Down, down it burns down
Our house is burning down
Ask me why a dream gets you by
But let it want, turns a dangerous thing
Watch out for it, it snakes right past
Then turns around and it sucks you in
What happens when you get stuck?
Get to the bottom of the illusion that you're in
From the roots now it's shook up
Know that what ails without will do you in
We're the keepers
While we sleep in America
Our house is burning down
Our house is burning
We're the keepers
While we sleep in America
Our house is burning down
Our house is burning
Down, down it burns down
Our house is burning down
And not a thing I've done
Abates my fear
And not a thing I've done
Abates my fear
And still although our hearts can't run
We are gone
We are gone
On the heels of all we have done, know
We're the keepers
While we sleep in America
Our house is burning down
Our house is burning
We're the keepers
While we sleep in America
Our house is burning down
Our house is burning down
We're the keepers
While we sleep in America
Our house is burning down
Our house is burning
We're the keepers
While we sleep in America
Our house is burning down
Our house is burning
Down, down it burns down
Our house is burning
Down, down it burns down
Our house is burning
Down, down it burns down
Down, down it burns down
Down, down it burns down
Down, down it burns down
The lyrics of "The Keepers" by Santigold seem to be an incisive commentary on the state of America. The first lines of the song describe walking with smoke in one's eyes, which could represent confusion or an inability to see clearly. It's as if the American people are blind to the destruction they have caused, just as they don't know where they've been. The lyrics then shift to a conversation with someone who is just as wrong as they were before, and the singer is urging them to man up and take responsibility for their actions.
The chorus, "We're the keepers while we sleep in America, our house is burning down," is a powerful statement about the state of the country. The use of "our" makes it clear that the singer sees everyone as responsible for what is happening. The metaphor of a burning house is intense and evocative, suggesting that the country is on the brink of collapse. The second verse goes on to talk about the dangers of illusion and being sucked in. The lyrics urge listeners to get to the bottom of the deception and recognize that what ails without will do them in. The final lines repeat the chorus, emphasizing the point that America is burning down, and everyone is complicit.
