Previously, White was the lead singer of the Philadelphia-based punk rock/ska band Stiffed, but, while in the band, she was offered a solo contract. Working with fellow Stiffed member, John Hill, as co-producer, she recorded her debut album, Santogold, which was released in April 2008. Her style has been defined as a mix of dub, electronica, hip hop & new wave
In February 2009, she officially changed her stage name to Santigold as a result of infomercial jeweller Santo Gold, who threatened legal action against White and her record label Downtown Records. However, despite the dispute, the title of her debut album remains Santogold. Upon the change of her stage name, Downtown Records issued a press release which stated:
“Change the graffiti on the bathroom wall, get your tattoo fixed, get your T-shirt airbrushed and change the name on your year-end list: Santogold is now Santigold. She’s not telling you why, that’s just how it is.”

Anna
Santogold Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I may lack virtue
But I'm penitent
Ah-ooooh
Ah-ooooh
To lose my mind
It's never easy
A shadow still
Ah-ooooh
Ah-ooooh
J-j-jesus pieces
Rescue me
the more I try
the more it gets too complicated
J-j-jesus pieces
Rescue me
The more I give up
The more it takes
The more it takes
My name is Anne, I'll take a stand
I'll hold my head up dig on in
Ah-oooooooh
You can bait me for the hell of it
I'll take it for the hell of it
See it there, but it's too far ahead
Go numb from how bad I want it
See it there but it's too far ahead
And I hear you calling to me right from here
J-j-jesus pieces
Rescue me
the more I try
the more it gets too complicated
J-j-jesus pieces
Rescue me
The more I give up
The more it takes
The more it takes
The song "Anne" by Santogold tells the story of a woman named Anne who is trying to find her way out of a difficult situation. She has a plan, but she also recognizes that she "may lack virtue" and feels penitent about her actions. She's struggling to keep her sanity, feeling like there's a shadow that's weighing her down. The repetition of "Ah-ooooh" adds to the haunting feel of the song, emphasizing Anne's feeling of being trapped in her own mind.
The repeated phrase "J-j-jesus pieces, rescue me" is a cry out for help from Anne. She's asking for divine intervention to help her with her problems, even though she admits that the more she tries to fix things, the more complicated they become. She's caught in a vicious cycle of trying to take control of her life and feeling like things are slipping further out of reach. The last two lines of the chorus, "The more I give up, the more it takes / The more it takes" emphasize her feeling of being overwhelmed and drained by her struggles.
The verse "My name is Anne, I'll take a stand / I'll hold my head up dig on in / Ah-oooooooh" show that despite her difficulties, Anne is determined to keep fighting. She won't let anyone bait her into giving up on herself or her goals. She sees what she wants in front of her, but it's so far away that it's causing her pain. The final line, "And I hear you calling to me right from here" leaves the listener wondering who is calling out to her - is it someone trying to help, or is it a hallucination caused by her struggles?
Overall, "Anne" is a powerful song that tells the story of someone struggling to find their way out of a tough situation. The haunting music and repeated phrases add to the feeling of being trapped, while the chorus shows an ever-present sense of hopelessness. However, despite her difficulties, Anne remains determined to keep fighting.

This is actually the song that got me into her. I liked L.E.S Artistes more but Anne is the first song I heard and I loved it.

And don't you get sick and tired of hearing how "WRONG" it is that not more people know about this song, or this artist, or "a moment of silence for those who haven't heard this song before..." Music has its own agenda, and every musician his own path. It's not about numbers. It's about art.
