Bareilles was born and raised in Eureka, California, United States.

After graduating from UCLA in 2002, Bareilles performed at local bars and clubs. She issued two demos of mostly live tracks in 2003: The First One in April and The Summer Sessions in October.

In January 2004, Bareilles released her first studio album, Careful Confessions. She signed a contract with Epic Records' A&R executive Pete Giberga on April 15, 2005. The remainder of the year and early 2006 was spent writing and reworking songs for her upcoming album.

Her debut major-label album Little Voice came out on July 17, 2007.

I love how real artists like SaraB are underrated because they're treasures and it means they're hard to find. Those who find them are privileged enough to be hearing what they have to offer. And only a few have ears to good music that's why followers of great artists like Sara B is not that much. Those in the lime light just give out beat or even noise, but hers is real music - poetic, relatable, raw and creative. Simply SaraB!

People need to shut up about Sara being underrated. Just because she doesn't get heard on the radio 24/7 doesn't mean she's underrated. I hate it when people pride themselves for "listening to real music" like Sara. Shut up. Listen to Sara. Just listen. There's no need to compare her to anyone. Just shut the fuck up and enjoy her music. She's not doing it to be popular, she's not doing it to win awards. She's doing it because it's her craft, because it's what she wants to do, because it's what she wants. Appreciate her talent. Don't compare her to anyone, because she doesn't want to be compared. She wants to be heard. And so what if she's not heard by a lot? So fucking what? Nobody fucking cares. As long as you listen, as long as some ONE listens. That's good enough. Don't make it seem like she doesn't have enough lustre because she's not heard by millions. As long as someone, some ONE listens, that's good enough. So shut up about being "privileged to hear her." You're not special. Her fanbase is not special. I'm not special and I listen to her. Just shut up and listen, and let her voice steal you away momentarily from your waking life. Enjoy her voice, her lyrics, her. Sara doesn't want to be recognised. She doesn't want to win a Grammy (although that would be nice for any performer, but that's besides the point.) All she wants is for someone to listen to her. And that's good enough for her. Your listening is good enough for her.

So stop, shut up, and listen. And remember: comparison is the biggest thief of happiness.

P.S.: I'm mad because people cry about her not being popular like Taylor Swift or Adele or any popular singer. Literally her breakout song was about defying people who could make her popular if she followed their wishes. Hint: she defied them and wrote a song about how she didn't give a fuck about their wishes.

When I listen back to that vocal take, I don’t hear my best singing and I get self-conscious about that. I'm very lucky to be a fan of Sara. Just listening to her beautiful soulful voice and heatfelt lyrics is something I will never get tired of doing. She's my fave singer and songwriter and I'm always proud of saying that even though some of my friends don't know her. It's their loss anyway. XD

This song reminded me of the first time I ever said "I love you" to someone who is still dear to me. He rejected me because were too far apart and felt that it was unrealistic that we would ever be together. As time goes on in some ways I fear he maybe right but it still never means that feeling will go away. It exists as possibilities and dreams, something that is carved into your heart for as long as you live. Were still friends but apart of me still wishes he wouldn't keep sending me presents of friendship. I'd just want him, and only him. No matter how much I try to stop feeling it won't stop, my heart will always yearn for him, no matter who is in my life and whoever i may end up with. I'll always be the love sick fool for him but know that it may never happen. But one can hope right?

im so amazed at how sara could have composed this song and all others if she hadnt experienced all the travails of emotions to express it into so deeply profound of a song. every song of hers still keeps me guessing every allusion and meaning. its like stepping in wanderland,my soul singin as if in a trance,confused and yet understanding. pitch perfect cold voice and a perceptive lyricist. This seems to really pick at my rotten heartstrings. It's so full of feeling and thought that I just want to hug her and hand her all the awards. This was robbed of a rightful award... I don't think I've never heard the word carbon in other songs besides the Elements of the Periodic Table song and that They Might be Giants song. Just... wow. Genius, pure genius.
