Cassiopeia
Sara Bareilles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come in close now, it's time to tell a story
Long ago and so many years before we
Ever were, ever dreamed we even could be
There was her and her very first heartbeat

All alone in the corner of the night sky
Spiral bones of a supernova starlight
Fell in love with another burning bright she
Dreamed of a way to ignite she said,

Tonight
Come on, come on collide
Break me to pieces, I
I think you're just like heaven why

Come on, come on collide
Let's see what a fire feels like
I bet it's just like heaven

Just like heaven
Just like heaven

Such a shame
nowhere near, even the near mist light years away
From the hope of being sun-kissed anchored home
in her interstellar sea but, poor lonely Cassiopeia
So she sighs and she burns with desperation
Learns to cry over love of constellations
Then the spark from a star shooting too close
They both smiled what a day to explode, she said

Tonight
Come on, come on collide
Break me to pieces, I
I think you're just like heaven why

Come on, come on collide
Let's see what a fire feels like
I bet it's just like heaven

Just like heaven
Just like heaven

Long ago in a sky built before us
A supernova grew up to be stardust

Overall Meaning

The song Cassiopeia by Sara Bareilles is a poetic and celestial tale that speaks about the emotions of the constellation Cassiopeia. The song starts with the singer inviting the listener to come closer and listen to a story that happened many years before humans even existed. The story is about Cassiopeia, a constellation in the night sky, who fell in love with another burning star. Cassiopeia dreamed of a way to ignite her love and the singer sings the chorus inviting the stars to collide and break Cassiopeia to pieces, to see what a fire feels like.

As the song progresses, the singer tells the story of how Cassiopeia is so far away from the hope of being sun-kissed anchored home in her interstellar sea. She is lonely and burns with desperation for love. Cassiopeia cries over the love of constellations until the spark from a star shooting too close sets off an explosion, which Cassiopeia describes as "just like heaven." The singer then ends the song with a message that Cassiopeia's love story is still shining in the vastness of the universe.

she said in the commentary album how this song is about the constellation Cassiopeia and how she personified it in this song by making the supernova fall in love with another star that was beyond light years away. I think that is absolutely amazing how she did that and made it into such a powerful song, this is why I love Sara, she puts so much meaning into her music.

Sara has a way of writing love songs. Love Song was a prime example of that, but as she's grown as an artist and a woman, she's continued to write amazing works and this one is just as, if not better (in my opinion) than, Love Song

This song is perfect!
Perfect tune, perfect lyrics, perfect harmonies and perfect voice.

Eru Chitanda

Fell in love with another burning bright.
She dreamed of a way to ignite.

Sara writes lovely lyrics! As someone like me who is interested in Greek mythology, I'm pleased to know that she would write a song about it.

The song and title itself is very meaningful and not pointless at all.

I just found this song while looking for inspiration for a character of mine named Cassiopeia who is a princess born from a star. This song fits her so well I’m gonna be listening to it over and over. It’s just so pretty!!!
