Gravity
Sara Bareilles Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It never takes too long
No matter what I say or do
I'll still feel you here 'till the moment I'm gone
You hold me without touch
You keep me without chains
I never wanted anything so much than to drown in your love
Set me free, leave me be
I don't want to fall another moment into your gravity
Here I am, and I stand
So tall, just the way I'm supposed to be
But you're on to me and all over me
Oh, you loved me 'cause I'm fragile
When I thought that I was strong
But you touch me for a little while
And all my fragile strength is gone
Set me free, leave me be
I don't want to fall another moment into your gravity
Here I am, and I stand
So tall, just the way I'm supposed to be
But you're on to me and all over me
I live here on my knees as I try to make you see
That you're everything I think I need here on the ground
But you're neither friend nor foe though I can't seem to let you go
The one thing that I still know is that you're keeping me down
You're keeping me down, eh ooh
You're on to me, on to me, and all over
Something always brings me back to you
It never takes too long
"Gravity" is a power ballad by Sara Bareilles that talks about a complicated and tumultuous relationship. The first two lines of the song suggest that no matter what happens or how hard she tries, she cannot escape the pull of her lover. She feels controlled and held back by her partner, yet she is still attracted to them. This is evident when she sings, "I never wanted anything so much than to drown in your love and not feel your reign." She is acknowledging that their love is toxic, but she cannot help but be drawn to it.
The chorus is a plea from Bareilles to her partner to release her and let her go. She wants to break free and not be under their control anymore. She knows she is supposed to be strong and stand tall, but her partner has taken that away from her. She is living on her knees, trying to make them see that they are everything she thinks she needs but deep down, she knows they are keeping her down.
The overall message of this song is about the power dynamics in a relationship and the difficulties that come with trying to break free from someone who has a hold on you. It is a relatable song that speaks to anyone who has been in a relationship where they feel trapped or held back.

God. I’m 40. Absolutely broken. Husband left. I am in a horrid divorce. No money. But I remember why I write music. Because it can touch souls. Hers touched mine many years ago. This song is a medicine. Thank you
@jack_snapper
I'm right there with you. Same exact scenario, turning 40 tomorrow. I'm still here though, so are you 💙

I fell in love with Sara Bareilles and her music years ago when I saw a video of one of her songs. Then she wrote the music for 'Waitress' and the deal was sealed. My wife and I drove 9 hours to NYC see that musical when she starred in it. To me she is a genius and a superstar, unquestionably.

Maybe the video was "gonna get over you". I loved that video
