It Takes Two
Sara Bareilles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You've changed
You're daring
You're different in the woods
More sure
More sharing
You're getting us through the woods

If you could see
You're not the man who started
And much more open hearted
Than I knew
You to be

It takes two
I thought one was enough
It's not true
It takes two of us
You came through
When the journey was rough
It took you
It took two of us

It takes care
It takes patience and fear and despair
To change
Though you swear
To change
Who can tell if you do?
It takes two

You've changed
You're thriving
There's something about the woods
Not just surviving
You're blossoming in the woods

At home I'd fear
We'd stay the same forever
And then out here
You're passionate, charming, considerate, clever

It takes one
To begin, but then once
You've begun
It takes two of you
It's no fun
But what needs to be done
You can do
When there's two of you

If I dare
It's because I'm becoming
Aware of us
As a pair of us
Each accepting a share
Of what's there

We've changed
We're strangers
I'm meeting you in the woods
Who minds
What dangers?
I know we'll get past the woods
And once we're past
Let's hope the changes last

Beyond woods
Beyond witches and slippers and hoods
Just the two of us
Beyond lies
Safe at home with our beautiful prize
Just a few of us

It takes trust
It takes just
A bit more
And we're done
We want four
We had none
We've got three

We need one
It takes two

Overall Meaning

In "It Takes Two," Sara Bareilles and Brian d'Arcy James sing about the transformative power of love and partnership. The song explores how two individuals can change and grow together, overcoming obstacles and becoming better versions of themselves.

The opening lines suggest that one of the individuals has undergone a significant transformation. They have become more daring and different, navigating through the challenges of life with more confidence and a willingness to share. The singer recognizes this change and acknowledges that the person they are addressing is not the same as before. They have become more open-hearted and surprising, surpassing the singer's expectations.

The chorus emphasizes the importance of unity and partnership. The singer had believed that they only needed themselves, but now realizes that it takes two people to navigate life's difficulties. The other person in the relationship has proven to be a support system, coming through during rough times. Together, they can face any challenges that come their way.

The second verse further explores how the relationship has evolved. The individual who has changed is now thriving, blossoming in the metaphorical woods. The singer reflects on their initial fear that the relationship would remain stagnant, but now sees their partner as passionate, charming, considerate, and clever. This growth spurs the singer to take risks, knowing that they are part of a partnership that can weather any storm.

The bridge emphasizes the importance of trust and the willingness to change. It acknowledges that change can be scary and uncertain, but it is necessary for growth. The two individuals have become strangers to their former selves, but they are now getting to know each other in a new, deeper way. They are confident that they can overcome any dangers or challenges that come their way.

The song concludes with the hope that the changes they have experienced will last beyond the metaphorical woods they have ventured into. They envision a future together, safe and content, with their beautiful prize, which could refer to their love, their relationship, or perhaps even a child. The lyrics highlight that it takes trust, dedication, and the support of each other to navigate through life successfully.

@MermaidCore_

So deserving!!!!

@mspudds22

It’s funny to think that Jenna from waitress and Shrek from Shrek the musical are singing a duet but I love it

@mycroftholmes1868

I don't know why I try to watch these in the background. The facial expressions, the hand movements, the acting, the ENTHUSIASM behind the singing draws me in every time and I end up helplessly tabbing back to the video and watching whole the thing again and again. I love these performers.

@hugejohnson5011

I don't know what any of this is, but I love the way that they sing together. I didn't realize that this girl sang so beautifully. Wow!

@70260j

Sara is genuinely underappreciated for someone with such talent. Most that know of her love her to bits.

@hugejohnson5011

@M I had been aware of her, but had never keyed in to her type of music I guess, and am not up on things well enough to realize that she acted on stage. But just seeing this made it clear to me just how beautifully she sings, and also that she must be a joy to experience on stage. Thanks for the reply.

@70260j

@@hugejohnson5011 If you get the chance to see Sara on stage in concert or in musical theatre grab it! She's one of those rare artists that's better live than in the studio. Sara is also a wonderful, caring human being and funny as heck.

@hugejohnson5011

@M Thanks. And, I would even judge by how much fun she is having while doing the studio work shown, that she is very good live!
