You Matter to Me
Sara Bareilles Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I could find the whole meaning of life in those sad eyes
They've seen things that you never quite say, but I hear
Come out of hiding, I'm right here beside you
And I'll stay there as long as you let me

Because you matter to me
Simple and plain and not much to ask from somebody
You matter to me
I promise you do, you, you matter too
I promise you do, you see?
You matter to me

It's addictive the minute you let yourself think
The things that I say just might matter to someone
All of this time I've been keeping my mind on the running away
And for the first time I think I'd consider the stay

Because you matter to me
Simple and plain and not much to ask from somebody
You matter to me
I promise you do, you, you matter too
I promise you do, you see?
You matter to me

And you matter to me
Simple and plain and not much to ask from somebody
You matter to me
I promise you do, you
(Out of hiding I'm right here beside you)
You matter too
(As long as you have me)
I promise you do, you, you matter too
(Out of hiding I'm right here beside you)
I promise you do, you, you matter too
(I do, I promise you do, you matter to me)

I promise you do, you see
You matter to me

Overall Meaning

In the song "You Matter to Me," Sara Bareilles sings about the importance of human connection and how we all need to feel seen and heard. The opening line of the song, "I could find the whole meaning of life in those sad eyes," suggests that the singer has encountered someone who has experienced a great deal of pain and sadness. However, despite the fact that this person may not express their feelings explicitly, the singer can still hear their pain and wants them to know that they are not alone. The chorus of the song is a simple, yet powerful message: "You matter to me. Simple and plain and not much to ask from somebody. You matter to me. I promise you do, you, you matter too."

The song then moves into the singer's own experience of opening up and sharing with someone else, and how it can be a powerful and transformative experience. The line "The things that I say just might matter to someone" suggests that the singer has been hesitant to share their feelings in the past, perhaps because they feel they won't be heard or understood. However, in this moment, they are willing to take the risk because they realize that the connection they are forming with this other person is worth it. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the message that everyone deserves to be seen and heard, and that we all matter to each other.

Overall, "You Matter to Me" is a song about the power of human connection and the importance of feeling seen and heard. It's a reminder that we all have something to offer each other, and that by opening ourselves up to others, we can create meaningful relationships that can change our lives.

I’m obsessed with the harmonies in this. Jason’s voice melds beautifully with Sara’s. Divine.

I can really relate to the lines: "It's addictive the minute you let yourself think/The things that I say just might matter to someone". As the oldest of 4 kids, my parents do not really have time for me. I get to talk to them for maybe one minute everyday, the rest of the time they are helping my siblings or working or something. The only time I really get attention from adults is if I do something wrong.
But recently I have gotten to know my amazing teacher really well, and she actually likes hearing what I say, and wants to hear more. It is amazing. But I am afraid I will mess up and then not have anybody to talk to again. So I savor the time I have and try to be careful and make sure the people I love know that they matter to me.
