Sara Em is 30 years old and has been making her own music for more than 10 years. She was brought up in a christian home, and the family sang a lot together in church (pentecostal).
In her twenties Sara Em came out as gay, and struggled for several years with her identity and perception of God and what he was thinking of her being a lesbian. These years were very painful, and Sara Em wrote a lot of lyrics and music during this time where she expressed her feeling of exclusion from the church and longing for God.
If you talk with Sara Em today, she will tell you that she has landed in the feeling and conviction that God loves her - not in spite of her being a lesbian, but because she is herself. Exactly as God made her.
The music of Sara Em
Sara Em writes both lyrics and music. Some people describe it as Pop/Rock with a lot of emotions. She takes her inspiration from a wide spectrum of musicians, but if she had to pick one of special importance she would say Tori Amos.

How long
Sara Em Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I fear these walls are closing in on me
And I don't want to waste my time
On the things that are meaningless
To you
(But) how long, how long
Will this be going on
Tell me now that we can make it through
(But) how long, how long
I know I failed you
I'll try my best to get on up again
But I don't want to change your mind
I will only turn around and wait for you
(But) how long, how long
Will this be going on
You know that I believe in you
Tell me now that we can make it through
(But) how long, how long can we wait untill we fall
Don't wait until I fall
(But) how long, how long...
Don't make me wait
I'm gonna fall, I'm gonna fall
In Sara Em's song "How Long" the singer expresses a sense of feeling trapped and suffocated. She fears that the walls are closing around her and she is wasting her time on things that are meaningless to someone else. This might be reflective of the pressures people face in their daily lives, where they feel like they are not doing the things that they personally feel are important or fulfilling. The singer expresses her frustration, but also her determination to keep going and make it through. She believes in herself and her abilities, and she wants her partner to believe in her too.
The chorus of the song asks, "how long, how long will this be going on?" The repetition of this line emphasizes the singer's anxiety and urgency to get through the difficult situation she is in. She asks for reassurance that they can make it through together, and wonders how long they will have to wait before things improve. The final lines, "Don't wait until I fall / (But) how long, how long..." suggest that the singer is at a breaking point and needs support before it's too late.
Overall, "How Long" is a moving expression of the challenges people face in their lives, and the importance of having people who believe in and support them along the way.

@@kellyb1597 Lol! Funny you say that, girl. I work in a footwear store. A couple weeks back a young woman visited our store that was mentally challenged, but completely in the moment.
She immediately asked my name. I told her Ted, and I asked her name. He friend said she never asks for anyone's name. Her name is Sarah. 😃
I said, "nice to meet you Sarah. One of my favorite songs ever is by a group named Jefferson Starship. It's called "Sarah", and I asked, "did they name that song after you"? 🤣
She blushed and said, "noooo". I told her, "I don't know, girl. The song is all about a special girl. I think they named it after you".
She beamed all the way out of the door. They're both about 21. Surprisingly, neither of them know who Jefferson is, much less have ever heard the song. But her friend assured her they'd listen to it the minute they hit the car.
I bet you when she heard it, she wished it was written in honor of her. 😉
