In 1943, Sara Montiel started getting involved in show business after winning a new talent contest sponsored by a local filming company. Her debut came after playing a role in the movie Te Quiero Para Mi, directed by Ladislao Vajda. However, the newcomer's breakthrough came in 1948 with the successful Locura de Amor. In the early '50s, Montiel settled in Mexico and began her singing career while working along with Pedro Infante, Manolo Fábregas, and Agustin Lara, among other prominent local artists. In 1954, the acclaimed actress had the opportunity to work along with Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster in the making of Veracruz.
Montiel rose to Latin music stardom with the release of El Ultimo Cuplé (aka The Last Torch Song) movie soundtrack. During the 1970s, she toured the world leading celebrated musicals such as Saritísima, Increíble Sara, Super Sara Show, and Doña Sara de la Mancha. ~ Drago Bonacich, All Music Guide
Fumando Espero
Sara Montiel Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
genial, sensual.
Fumando espero
al hombre a quien yo quiero,
tras los cristales
de alegres ventanales.
mi vida no consumo
porque flotando el humo
me suelo adormecer...
Tendida en la chaisse longue
fumar y amar...
Ver a mi amante
solícito y galante,
sentir sus labios
besar con besos sabios,
y el devaneo
sentir con más deseos
cuando sus ojos veo,
sedientos de pasión.
Por eso estando mi bien
es mi fumar un edén.
Dame el humo de tu boca.
Anda, que así me vuelvo loca.
Corre que quiero enloquecer
de placer,
sintiendo ese calor
del humo embriagador
que acaba por prender
la llama ardiente del amor.
The lyrics of Sara Montiel's Fumando Espero describe a woman who is waiting for the man she loves while smoking. The act of smoking is portrayed as a pleasurable and sensual experience for her, and smoking helps her relax and drift off into a dreamy state. She imagines her fantasy lover coming to her, kissing her with wise kisses, and making passionate love to her. She describes smoking as an Eden in the presence of her lover. The woman is so deeply in love with her man that even the smoke from his mouth has the power to excite her and drive her crazy.
The metaphor of smoking as a symbol of seduction, sensuality, and pleasure has been used in several literary and artistic works. In this song, smoking is portrayed as a way for the singer to cope with her yearning for her lover and to stay in a trance-like state until he arrives. The song could be interpreted as an ode to addiction or a representation of the addictive nature of love. The lyrics are romantic and passionate, and the song's melody evokes a sense of longing and desire.
