Sarah Lyrics

Drop me off Sunday morn' I ain't even tired
But I, I want a Monday morning with you
Do the thing and play the part like Ken and Barbie
Everybody stares when we're at a party
And I, just wanna get gone with you
You are killing me slowly
Why can't we be each others one and only
I'm afraid to ask for more while I'm still believing
That time will do what it's supposed to do
We oughta cut the shit and just give into it
Quit being scared of feelings take our walls and move 'em
Cause I just wanna get gone with you
You are killing me slowly
Why can't we be each others one and only
You're so steady and cool riding into the sunset
Can't ya turn that horse around take the reigns and park it yeah
You are killing me slowly
Why can't we be each others one and only love
In Sarah's song "One and Only," she describes a bittersweet relationship that is characterized by a passionate weekend romance but lacks the commitment she desires. The lyrics paint a picture of the cycle they repeatedly go through, as they spend their weekends together, enjoying the fire of their chemistry, only to part ways on Sunday morning without feeling tired. Sarah yearns for a Monday morning with her lover, longing for a deeper connection beyond the surface-level fun they share.
She compares their relationship to the idealized image of Ken and Barbie, where they play the part of the perfect couple, but deep down, she craves more. Sarah feels frustrated and trapped by their part-time love, as it doesn't feel right to have full-time freedom without the commitment she desires. She acknowledges her fear of asking for more while still holding onto hope that time will bring the necessary changes.
Sarah expresses her desire to give in to their feelings and break down the walls they've built, suggesting that they should stop being afraid and take a chance on love. She believes that being each other's one and only, committing to one another, would bring fulfillment and happiness. She sees her lover as someone steady and cool, but needs them to turn their metaphorical horse around and take control of their relationship, rather than always riding off into the sunset. Sarah feels like her lover's inability to fully commit is slowly hurting her, and she questions why they can't be each other's one and only love.

The very thought of you makes my heart sing
Like an April breeze on the wings of spring,
And you appear in all your splendor,
My one and only love.
The shadows fall and spread their mystic charms
In the hush of night while you're in my arms.
I feel your lips, so warm and tender,
My one and only love.
The touch of your hand is like heaven,
A heaven that I've never known.
The blush on your cheek whenever I speak
Tells me that you are my own.
You fill my eager heart with such desire.
Ev'ry kiss you give sets my soul on fire.
I give myself in sweet surrender,
My one and only love.

What a voice, gets me chills all over my body

Sarah Vaughan had the most divine voice. I love her recordings with Billy Eckstine - Passing Strangers!

There is a version of this song by Johnny Hartman, with John Coltrane, that is soooo moving. Hartman has one of the best baritone voices ever, and is so smooth. If you can find it you are in for a treat. Hartman doesn't come in until about 2 minutes in, but is preceded by some very sweet saxophone by Coltrane. A masterpiece.

I yhink the best version is still by Johnny Mathis , only my opinion ...

coltrane is nice...but,a great female voice is so expansive and telling
stevenhs8821
Yes, love that version and Johnny Hartman.

You are sooooo right! I just heard it for the first time recently and was FLOORED! Billy Eckstein and a few others come close but Johnny Hartman has the most BEAUTIFUL baritone voice on that number I've EVER heard. His phrasing put me in the mind of a male version of Sarah V, which is why I even came here to listen to her version of that song....but his in my opinion is my FAV

Definitely. Johnny Hartman and John Coltrane. That 2 minutes intro by Coltrane.
Richard Schnell
The Coltrane/Hartman version is my favorite recording or all time. However, what a great performance by Sarah Vaughan here. Her vocalizations are lilting and sweet. I love it.

It's almost impossible for me to love a woman vocalist's version of any tune as much as I love an Ella Fitzgerald version, but Sarah Vaughan in general, and this tune in particular, may be the exception.
