Nessun dorma
Tu pure, o Principe
Nella tua fredda stanza
Guardi le stelle
Che tremano d'amore e di speranza
Ma il mio mistero è chiuso in me
No, no, sulla tua bocca lo dirò
Quando la luce splenderà
Ed il mio bacio scioglierà
Il silenzio che ti fa mio
Il nome suo nessun saprà
E noi dovrem ahimè morir, morir
Dilegua o notte
Tramontate, stelle
Tramontate, stelle
All'alba vincerò
Vincerò
Vincerò
The Italian opera aria 'Nessun Dorma' by Giacomo Puccini is considered to be one of the most popular and powerful pieces in the operatic repertoire. In this song, Sarah Brightman delivers a passionate and heartfelt rendition of the aria. The song is about Prince Calaf, who is in love with Princess Turandot, but she does not reciprocate his feelings. Nonetheless, he accepts her challenge to answer three riddles in exchange for her hand in marriage. In the final scene, Calaf answers the riddles correctly and offers Turandot a way out of the bargain. She decides to keep her word and Calaf imposes a challenge of his own: if Turandot guesses his name by dawn, he will forfeit his life. Calaf sings this piece in the evening, stating that he is alone in the prince’s room, gazing at the stars and embracing the hope of winning Turandot's love. He declares that his name is a mystery, one that no one will know, unless the morning light makes it clear on his own lips, when it will be used to seal his love for Turandot.
Brightman's exceptional voice and her interpretation of the song are remarkable, as she conveys the intensity of the emotions felt by the singer through her performance. The lyrics are grand and express the themes of love, sacrifice, honor and death, which are common in the grand opera tradition. The arias structure, which alternates between a slower-paced section and a powerful and faster-paced one, heightens the emotional tension in the song, creating a sense of urgency and dramatic impact.
