Who Wants To Live Forever
Sarah Brightman & London Symphony Orchestra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There's no place for us
What is this thing that builds our dreams
Yet slips away from us?
Who wants to live forever?
Who wants to live forever, who?
It's all decided for us
This world has only one sweet moment
Set aside for us
Who wants to live forever?
Who wants to live forever, who?
Now touch my tears with your lips
Touch my world with your fingertips
And we can have forever
And we can love forever
Forever is our today
Who wants to live forever?
Who wants to live forever, who?
Who waits forever anyway?
The lyrics of Sarah Brightman's song, "Who Wants to Live Forever," discuss the fleeting nature of life and the desire for eternity. There is a sense of desperation in the lines, "There's no time for us / There's no place for us / What is this thing that builds our dreams / Yet slips away from us?" The singer is questioning why life is so short and why the things they hope for seem to slip away from them.
The chorus repeats the question, "Who wants to live forever?" as if to say, who wouldn't want to live forever if given the choice. This idea is reinforced with the line, "Now touch my tears with your lips / Touch my world with your fingertips / And we can have forever / And we can love forever / Forever is our today." The singer is suggesting that by sharing a moment of love, immortality can be achieved.
The final line, "Who waits forever anyway?" brings the song to a close with a shift in tone. The singer is acknowledging that while immortality may seem desirable, the reality is that nothing lasts forever, not even life. The song is beautiful and haunting, exploring the complex emotions that come with the knowledge of our own mortality.

I had the amazing opportunity to see her in concert when she came to Canada. She brought tears to my eyes several times... she touched my soul. Thank you for blessing the world with your incredible voice and talent.

I've seen her twice here in Dallas Tx. Marvelous, mystical voice. My fav song is Carpe Diem with Greek Tenor Mario Frangoulis. Sarah was at her best in those days;

Never compare Freddie Mercury to Sarah Brightman - they are apples and oranges. One is not "better" than the other despite Freddie originating the song vocally. Sarah, judged by her own merits, is a dazzling sensation. As the Phantom sings - she is an "angel of music."

Forgot to add, she's currently on her Symphony World Tour - she had two albums last year (2008), Symphony and A Winter Symphony. Check them out, they're great! Symphony was what converted me into a full SarahB fan :).
