Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sarah Brightman's "Pie Jesu" are an emotional plea for peace, forgiveness, and eternal rest. The repetition of "pie Jesu" emphasizes the singer's desire for mercy from Jesus. "Qui tollis peccata mundi" translates to "who takes away the sins of the world" and is a reference to Jesus as the savior. The following line, "Dona eis requiem," means "grant them rest," and is a plea for eternal peace and rest for the deceased.

The Agnus Dei section of the song is similar, with pleas for mercy and rest. The word "Agnus" means "lamb," and the Agnus Dei is a reference to Jesus as the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. The final line of the song, "Requiem sempiternam," means "eternal rest," emphasizing the singer's desire for eternal peace for the deceased.

Overall, "Pie Jesu" is a heartfelt prayer for peace and eternal rest for the deceased. I looked this up because of Malaki's performance as well. It makes me cry everytime I hear it but I cant stop listening. I imagine this is the "muzak" of Heaven.

I certainly am. I remember it well when it was first released. It's an absolutely exquisite performance and setting of this sacred text. It still brings tears to my eyes. I also remember first hearing it to the soundtrack from where the images of this video come: a film called Hope & Glory.
