Smoke
Sarah Fimm Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It billows out from nothing
Laughing at my cries
Holding the charred remains of the last dirty joke
As if they know how it died
Everyone I that I've loved has turned to smoke
They come in single file and exit two by two
That I'm happier in the rain than the sun
And now every day that has come has turned to smoke
Still I hesitate to ask the great above what I have done
As it crashes through my system
Creation laughs at one
With nothing but
All there ever was.
The lyrics of Sarah Fimm's Smoke are hauntingly beautiful and depict a sense of loss that is heartbreaking. The artist talks about how everything that she loves turns into smoke, which could be a metaphor for how everything good eventually fades away. The smoke billows out from nothing, and it laughs at her cries, which could mean that the artist is helpless in the face of the loss that she feels. She holds the charred remains of the last dirty joke, which signifies that she is holding onto something that has been destroyed, and maybe that's the only thing that's left of what she once had.
In the second verse, the artist talks about how everyone she has ever loved has turned to smoke. They come and go, as if they knew what was to come, and the artist is left alone, happier in the rain than the sun. It could mean that she is more comfortable in her grief than in happiness because in sorrow, she can hold onto the memories of the ones she has lost. The words "turned to smoke" could mean that her loved ones were once real, but now the only thing that's left of them is a memory that is fading away.
In the third verse, the artist talks about how every day that has come has turned to smoke, and she hesitates to ask the great above what she has done. It could be that she is questioning her actions and why everything seems to be disappearing from her life. As the smoke crashes through her system, creation laughs at her, which could mean that nature is indifferent to her pain. The words "All there ever was" could mean that everything that she had seen as important was just an illusion and what's left now is the real essence of life.
