Excellent! I have a question: I am 80 and starting recorder playing on a Yamaha Plastic Basset. I hesitate to take the effort to switch to a C based Great bass for a second and wood recorder. It appears to me that it would be a good idea to skip down to a ContraBass for most music I might play. If you feel like responding, thank you very much. Billy Junge

Sarah, I love your videos. However, if you are going to sing in the manner you used on this video you will eventually lose your voice. I say that as a classical bass singer with about 40 years experience in bel canto style. There are way too many opera singers who didn't use bel canto and lost their singing voices by using some of your techniques. Please limit your singing thus or standby for trouble. This is just what I'd have expected from your recorder playing depth, subtlety and atmosphere. I love what you're doing here and I love what the Unthanks do.
You seem to sing like an improvisation on your instrument!
I also love the works of Hildegard von Bingen.I think an element of her style is called melismatic and I think you've used it. To my ears it daring and deeply expressive.
May I also recommend you listen to Martin Carthy singing this song on the lp Prince Heathen .You might find a certain quality to his rendition that could flavour your performance. I am coming from a novice level of ignorance and have only my demanding ears to guide me and I look up to your talent/skill!

Really nice!!
I was wondering if practing the recorder would be a good exercise for the breathe in signing....(it could be more fun to warm up with the recorder or train for the singing...especially for kids....!😊)

surfa0 I play the flute (and some recorder as well) and I sing too. It definitely helps with air capacity and control but from my experience it's not the only way you should be practising your breathing

Amazing performance, and a really otherworldly (in a good way!) arrangement. I feel uncomfortable seeing that young woman in her distress, and it doesn't let up, there's no resolution for the viewer any more than for the protagonist.

I’m not sure- I learnt the tune and text by ear from the Unthanks CD and then made a the arrangement and harmonies myself.. you can find versions of the tune on the session . org!

One of my undergrad degrees (the one I don’t use...) is in opera, and Britten’s arrangements of English and Irish folk songs were my introduction to folk music; I did a set of them (with harp!) on my senior recital program. I don’t know if Britten’s arrangements have been set for voice and recorder— do you? I feel like that would be amazing.

Also, your voice is lovely. I know you’ve heard (/read) that a bunch by now, but here’s one more vote. I’ll take a “but I’m really an instrumentalist” singer with excellent musicianship and clear dedication to the piece over a showy voice ANY. DAY.

Actually... no! I played the flute for a long time, and the recorder is in the end my first love... I love the sound of the traverso but I’d rather listen tonothers play it :)
