Sarah McLachlan Lyrics

And one of us who wants to leave
In a world created for only us
An empty cage that had no key
Don't you know that we're working with flesh and blood
Carving out of jealousy
Crawling into each other, it's smothering
Every little part of me
What kind of love is this that keeps me
Hanging on
Despite everything it's doing to me
What is this love that keeps me coming
Back for more
When it will only end in misery
I know too many people unhappy
In a life from which they'd love to flee
Watching others get everything offered
They're wanton for discovery
Oh, my brother, my sister, my mother
You're losing your identity
Can't you see that it's you in the window
Shining with intensity
What kind of love is this that keeps me
Hanging on
Despite everything it's doing to me
What is this love that keeps me coming
Back for more
When it will only end in misery
What kind of love is this that keeps me
Hanging on
Despite everything it's doing to me
What is this love that keeps me coming
Back for more
When it will only end in misery
The lyrics to Sarah McLachlan’s song “Circle” delve deep into the complexities of love and relationships. The opening line “There are two of us talking in circles and one of us who wants to leave” sets the tone for the overall message of the song. It speaks to the feeling of being trapped in a relationship that is no longer fulfilling, but continuing to hold on regardless.
The second verse speaks to the overwhelming power of love, even when it is not healthy. Describing it as “smothering every little part of me,” the lyrics suggest a kind of addiction to the feeling of being in love, even when it causes pain and suffering. The chorus questions this kind of love and why someone would continue to hold on despite the misery it brings.
The final verse brings a wider perspective to the song, focusing on the larger societal pressures that contribute to the feeling of being trapped. McLachlan references “too many people unhappy in a life from which they’d love to flee,” highlighting the way in which society puts pressure on us to conform and adhere to certain expectations that can lead to us losing our sense of self.
Overall, the lyrics of “Circle” speak to the universal experience of struggling with the complexities of love and relationships as well as the societal pressures that can lead us to feel trapped and lost in our own lives.
