Stupid
Sarah McLachlan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Night, lift up the shades
Let in the brilliant light of morning
But steady me now
For I am weak and starving for mercy

Sleep has left me alone
To carry the weight of unraveling where we went wrong
It's all I can do to hang on
To keep me from falling into old familiar shoes

How stupid could I be
A simpleton could see
That you're no good for me
But you're the only one I see

Love has made me a fool
It set me on fire and watched as I floundered
Unable to speak
Except to cry out and wait for your answer

But you come around in your time
Speaking of fabulous places, create an oasis
Dries up as soon as you're gone
You leave me here burning in this desert without you

How stupid could I be
A simpleton could see
That you're no good for me
But you're the only one I see

Everything changes
Everything falls apart
Can't stand to feel myself losing control
But deep in my senses, I know

How stupid could I be?
A simpleton could see
That you're no good for me
But you're the only one I see

How stupid could I be
A simpleton could see

That you're no good for me
But you're the only one I see

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sarah McLachlan's song, Stupid, delve into a tumultuous relationship that has left the singer feeling weak, foolish, and uncertain. The song seems to be about a woman who is torn between her rational thoughts and her emotional attachment to her partner. The first verse sets the scene for the emotional turmoil that is to follow. The singer is weak and starving for mercy, yet she remains determined to face the bright light of morning. She is unable to let go of the past and is struggling to hold on to the present.

In the second verse, the singer acknowledges that love has made her a fool, and she is unable to find the words to communicate her feelings to her partner. She is caught between feeling the intense fire of love and the fear of being hurt. Her partner creates an oasis, promising fabulous places and experiences, but they quickly disappear when he is gone. She is left alone, burning in the desert without him.

The chorus of the song repeats the lyric, "How stupid could I be, a simpleton could see, that you're no good for me, but you're the only one I see." The singer is aware that her partner is not good for her, but she cannot help but feel drawn to him. She feels like she is losing control, but deep down, she knows the truth.

Overall, Stupid is a powerful song that explores the complexities of love, relationships, and the human psyche.

Do starých známých kolejí

Jak jsem mohla být tak hloupá
I blbeček by to viděl

I blbeček by to viděl
Že nejsi pro mě dost dobrý
Ale ty jsi jediný, koho vidím

Všechno se mění
Všechno se rozpadá
Nemůžu se zbavit pocitu, že ztrácím kontrolu
Ale hluboko uvnitř vím

Jak jsem mohla být tak hloupá
I blbeček by to viděl
Že nejsi pro mě dost dobrý
Ale ty jsi jediný, koho vidím

Saw Sarah live, August of 2014, in the Austin City Limits intimate venue. There was no lip-syncing. Her voice was as clean, pure, and as perfect as you could ever imagine. I've been to tons of concerts (I'm 62 and of the Crosby, Stills, Nash &Young era), and Sarah's was the very BEST concert I've EVER witnessed, hands down.

+Amelia Reagan Wright I know I'm dating oneself, but I'm nearly as old as you are, and I have a few concerts under my belt as well... I imagine you've seen Jackson Browne... and, since you mention C,S,N, & Y, I would guess that you're a fan of "Teach Your Children"... Haven't yet seen Sarah live yet... I was thinking on waiting until I got to Calgary to do so... = )

Daniel B. Metallo You will be in for an AMAZING concert. Sarah's voice was so clean, pure, and not enhanced. I just couldn't believe what I was hearing, and yes, I've been to the concerts you named.

@ird2607

@Amelia Reagan Wright Yep, she’s real magic

@EnviroArtiste86

I support singers who show their beautiful, genuine voice to the audience instead of using autotune :)

@ChrisTopheRaz

This song carried me for two days when i needed it the most.

@NoisyWombat

I never thought of this song as being about adultery, instead I always felt it so deeply described the feeling of being in a on-again off-again relationship exactly like the one I was in for 11 years. You know that they are never going to fully commit to you, and maybe its better that way, but you keep letting your eyes be blinded by the fantasy that you could be happy together.

@Jurodrix

The song is open for several meanings. Maybe, for you, it's better suited this way. As someone commented previously, it can also mean the man being cheated. He knows about his wife's affair and still loves her and wants her... And is willing to forgive her.
