Time
Sarah McLachlan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lying in my bed, I hear the clock tick and think of you
Caught up in circles
Confusion is nothing new
Flashback, warm nights
Almost left behind
Suitcase of memories
Time after
Sometimes you picture me
I'm walking too far ahead
You're calling to me, I can't hear
What you've said
Then you say, "go slow"
And I fall behind
The second hand unwinds

If you're lost you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, I'll be waiting
Time after time
If you're lost, you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, I will be waiting
Time after time

After my picture fades and darkness has
Turned to gray
Watching through windows
You're wondering if I'm okay
Secrets stolen from deep inside (deep inside)
And the drum beats out of time

If you're lost you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you, I'll be waiting
Time after time
If you're lost, you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, I will be waiting
Time after time
Time after time

I've got a suitcase of memories that I almost left behind
Time after time
Time, time, time

But you say to go slow but I fall behind
Time after time after time (after time, oh)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sarah McLachlan and Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" is a poignant song that discusses the complexities of romantic relationships. The lines "Lying in my bed, I hear the clock tick and think of you, Caught up in circles, Confusion is nothing new" suggests that the song's narrator is struggling with her thoughts and feelings about a past relationship that she can't seem to move on from. She is caught up in a circle of nostalgia, remembering the good times in the relationship but also aware of the confusion and turmoil that it brought her.

The line, "After my picture fades and darkness has Turned to grey, Watching through windows, You're wondering if I'm okay" further drives home the idea of a relationship that has ended but lingers in memory. The singer feels like she is being watched from afar, almost like the other person is monitoring her progress after the relationship's end. Ultimately, the song's refrain provides a sense of hope and reassurance. It suggests that even though things have ended, the two individuals will always be there for each other.

Time here
All but means nothing
Just shadows that move across the wall
They keep me company, but they don't ask of me
They don't say nothing at all (ah)
And I need just a little more silence (ah)
And I need just a little more time
But you send your thieves to me
Silently stalking me
Dragging me into your wall
Would you give me no choice in this?
I know you can't resist, trying to reopen a sore
Leave me be, I don't wanna argue
I'd just get confused and I'd come all undone
And if I agree, well, it's just to appease you
'Cause I don't remember what we're fighting for
You see love, the tight, thorny thread
That you spin in a circle of gold
You have me to hold me
A token for all to see
Captured to be yours alone
I need just a little more silence
And I need just a little more time
The courage to pull away
There will be hell to pay
The deeper you cut to the bone
Leave me be, I don't wanna argue
I'd just get confused and I'd come all undone
And if I agree, well, it's just to appease you
'Cause I don't remember what we're fighting for
Time here
All but means nothing
Just shadows that move across the wall
They keep me company
But they don't ask of me
They don't say nothing at all
Leave me be, I don't wanna argue
I'd just get confused and I'd come all undone
And if I agree, well, it's just to appease you
'Cause I don't remember what we're fighting for

I’m a huge metal head, but Sarah is my guilty pleasure. She has such a grasp on vocal range and rhythm that I can’t help but love her music.

I'm a diehard rivethead, but Sarah McLachlan & Enya are phenomenal.

This song is not nearly as popular as it should be. Bloody amazing. But then again, so is every song Sarah writes. I especially love this one because everythnig about it is so haunting. The music, her lulling voice, the pained lyrics. "Leave me be, I don't want to argue, I just get confused and I come all undone, and if I agree, well, it's just to appease you, 'cause I don't remember what we're fighting for." Wonderful.

I think this is arguably the best song on the album. Her voice is mysterious and melodious, but that's her voice in every song. Still, I could listen to this song every day and never tire of it.

Songs are often ruined by over-production. But Sarah's songs - and especially this one - are often masterpieces of collaboration between singer and producer. The studio effects in this song perfectly enhance the beauty of the melody and of Sarah's vocals. My favorite of all her songs.

I gave your album afterglow to my mum when shes was dying, 13 years ago now.. she was one of the most desperate cases in Australia at the time needing both lungs and a heart transplant, with even our prime minister at the time pleading her case in parliament. She loved it and this was her favorite song from the album, maybe her idea of time being so different from our own. I never forgot this, and what it meant to her at the time, when she was so scared and could barely move or breath.. when all i could do was brush her hair to calm her down.. and what it means to me. I wish i could give you a hug one day and look into your eyes to show you how much these things mean to us, even in defeat, and give you something back for what you gave to us. ❤
