Into The Fire
Sarah McLachlon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mother teach me to walk again
Milk and honey so intoxicating

I'm reunited
Into the fire
I am the spark
Into the fire
I yearn for comfort

Open the doors that lead on into eden
Don't want no cheap disguise
I follow the signs marked back to the beginning
No more compromise

And into the fire
I'm reunited
Into the fire
I am the spark
Into the night
I yearn for comfort

Free the water that carries me to the sea
You I see as my security

Into the fire
I'm reunited
Into the fire
I am the spark
Into the night
I yearn for comfort

I will stare at the sun until its light doesn't blind me
I will walk into the fire until its heat doesn't burn me
And I will feed the fire

Into the fire
I'm reunited
Into the fire
I am the spark
Into the night
I yearn for comfort

Into the fire...

Into the fire
I'm reunited
Into the fire
I am the spark
Into the night
I yearn for comfort

Into the fire...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sarah McLachlan's "Into the Fire" can be interpreted in different ways depending on the listener's perspective. One way to read it is as a metaphor for rebirth or redemption. The singer, who may be going through a difficult time, seeks guidance and comfort from a maternal figure ("Mother, teach me to walk again"). The idea of milk and honey, which are traditionally associated with abundance and prosperity, reinforces the idea of a new beginning.

In the chorus, the singer expresses a desire to face challenges ("Into the fire") and to be the catalyst for change ("I am the spark"). This may imply a willingness to take risks and embrace the unknown in order to grow and evolve. The repetition of the phrase "I yearn for comfort" in each chorus, however, indicates that the singer is also aware of the potential dangers of this journey and seeks reassurance along the way. The final lines, "I will stare at the sun until its light doesn't blind me / I will walk into the fire until its heat doesn't burn me / And I will feed the fire," suggest a determination to continue on this path despite the risks.

The first time I saw this video in the early 90s, I was so mesmerized with the beautiful video and music. After 25 years, I'm still feeling the same again watching and hearing this. This has got to be my most favourite of Sarah McLachlan, even though she made very good music afterwards. I must have watched this already over 20 times.

Hello Skinny

Great
