Courage
Sarah Polley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Watch the band through a bunch of dancers
Quickly, follow the unknown
With something more familiar
Quickly, something familiar

Courage, my word
It didn't come, it doesn't matter
Sleepwalk, so fast asleep
In the motel that has the lay of home
And piss on all of your background
And piss on all your surroundings

Courage, my word
It didn't come, it doesn't matter
Courage, my word
It didn't come, it doesn't matter, uh-huh-huh
Courage, my word
It didn't come, it doesn't matter, uh-huh-huh
Courage couldn't come at a worse time

There's no simple explanation
For anything important any of us do
Yeah, the human tragedy
Consists in the necessity
Of living with the consequences
Under pressure, under pressure

Courage, my word
It didn't come, it doesn't matter, uh-huh-huh
Courage, my word
It didn't come, it doesn't matter, uh-huh-huh
Courage, my word
It didn't come, it doesn't matter

Courage couldn't come at a worse time
(Worse time)

Overall Meaning

The song "Courage" by Sarah Polley is a powerful ballad about the struggle with courage, or the lack thereof, in difficult times. The opening lines set the stage for the rest of the song, as the singer watches a band play while surrounded by dancers. She follows something "more familiar," perhaps seeking comfort in something she knows, but eventually realizes that even the familiar can't provide the courage she needs.

The chorus repeats the line "Courage, my word / It didn't come, it doesn't matter," emphasizing the sense of frustration and hopelessness felt by the singer. She continues to feel disconnected and dissociated from her surroundings, even in her own motel room. The metaphor of "pissing" on her background and surroundings shows her rejection of her own past and present, further emphasizing her search for something more.

The second half of the song takes a more philosophical turn, acknowledging that there's no simple explanation for the choices we make or the things that happen to us. The human tragedy is in the inescapable consequences of those choices, and the pressure that comes with living with them. The repeated refrain of "Courage, my word" underscores the continued struggle to find the strength to face those consequences.

Overall, "Courage" is a haunting and poignant song that captures the emotional weight of searching for courage in times of difficulty and uncertainty.

I gotta say is that if I did another alternative or compilation of every episode of each season of 8 seasons together of all the anger, sadness, fear, agitation, frustration, fights, destruction, breakdowns as cries, sobs or weeps as tearups, being in the air as levitation or flights, as just floating in the air, dying, as just deaths, yells, screams or shouts of Charmed, I would've played a dramatic song you may or may not have heard of or heard it in these emotions and demeanors is called "A Building Panic" about approaching and escalating, or chaos happening.
