Coaches Who Turned: All
Coach She Picked: Adam
This singer-songwriter from Memphis, Tenn. will go down in Voice history as having one of the most raved about blind auditions to date. But long before she hit The Voice stage, Sarah’s been singing and performing.
According to her Facebook page, Sarah’s been traveling and performing since age 13 when she went cross-country with a theater troupe. At age 15 she got her first guitar and started writing songs. And though she was born and raised in Birmingham, Ala., she considers Memphis, Tenn. to be her home after studying at Visible Music College.
Unfortunately, things haven't always been easy for Sarah. Her father was addicted to drugs and absent from much of her life as a kid. But the good news is he's been sober for several years and they're no longer estranged. In fact, he's one of her biggest fans. And now she can use that experience to help pepper her performances with real and raw emotion.
Somebody That I Used to Know

Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember
You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
But I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Somebody
(I used to know)
Somebody
(Now you're just somebody that I used to know)
Somebody
(I used to know)
Somebody
(Now you're just somebody that I used to know)
(I used to know)
(That I used to know)
(I used to know)
Somebody
The song "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Sarah Simmons is about the aftermath of a break-up, particularly when one person is trying to move on while the other person seems to have cut them off entirely. The lyrics show a mix of emotions from the singer, including reminiscing about positive moments shared in the past while also acknowledging feelings of loneliness and hurt. The chorus emphasizes the idea that the other person is now just somebody that the singer used to know, highlighting the distance that has grown between them.
The lyrics also touch on the idea of addictive sadness, where a person becomes so used to feeling a certain way that they become addicted to it. In the context of the song, the singer seems to be saying that even though the relationship was painful, it was still something she became attached to, and the loss of it still hurts. The fact that the other person seemed to cut her off completely only adds insult to injury, making her feel like she is now a stranger to someone she once loved.
Overall, the lyrics of "Somebody That I Used To Know" capture the complex emotions that can follow a romantic break-up, particularly when one person seems to have moved on while the other is still struggling to let go.
