Stormy Weather
Sarah Vaughan/Joe Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't know why there's no sun up in the sky
Stormy weather
Since my man and I ain't together
Keeps rainin' all the time

Life is bare, gloom and misery everywhere
Stormy weather
Just cant get my poor self together
I'm so weary, wary all the time
The time
So weary all the time

When he went away the blues walked in and met me
If he stays away old rockin' chair will get me

All I do is pray
the Lord above will let me walk in the sun once more
Can't go on, every thing I had is gone
Stormy weather

Since my man and I ain't together
Keeps rainin' all the time

Can't go on, everything I had is gone
Stormy weather
Since my man and I ain't together
keeps rainin' all the time
It keeps rainin' all the time
just rainin', just rainin' all the time, ooh
it's raining, it's raining all the time
all the time, all the time, it just rains, rains

Rains, rains all the time
It keeps rainin', it's rainin' all the time

Overall Meaning

Sarah Vaughan's "Stormy Weather" is a powerful ballad that speaks to the pain and loneliness of heartbreak. The opening line "I don't know why there's no sun up in the sky" sets the tone of the song, conveying a sense of hopelessness and despair. The chorus of "Stormy Weather," with its repeated reference to the rain, reflects the sad state of the singer's emotions. She is unable to move on from the breakup and is consumed by her sadness.

The verses tell the story of a woman whose life has been shattered by the departure of her partner. Everywhere she looks, she sees sorrow and misery. The man she loved was the center of her world, and his absence has left a giant hole in her heart. She prays for the strength to overcome her grief and to be able to see the sunshine again. But no matter how hard she tries, the rain keeps falling, and the pain of her loss is ever-present.

This is unquestionably a landmark recording. Sarah Vaughan gives great expression to the Gershwin songbook, and Michael Tilson Thomas is superb conducting the LA Philharmonic early in his illustrious career. Thank you for uploading this section of that evening's performance! Would you consider putting the finale "Foggy Day in London Town"? I would be enormously thankful.

@luisjochoa

what delicious easiness of perfect singing, always creating new sounds all along.... Such freedom and such commitment to the original piece in total focus, exploding the music to galactic proportion!!! Sarah Vaughan is the Human Whale !!!

ahhh! no wonder - Marty did great work - I recall he arranged a lot for Sammy Davis, Jr. and many other fine singers. Thank you Buff.

@michelvassail3960

un chant d'une respiration inégalée, merci pour les précisions sur l'accompagnement de Sarah Vaughan dans cette éblouissante interprétation.

@Zbodin
