All the Things You Are
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You are the promised kiss of springtime
That makes the lonely winter seem long
You are the breathless hush of evening
That trembles on the brink of a lovely song
You are the angel glow that lights a star

The dearest things I know are what you are
Someday my happy arms will hold you
And someday I'll know that moment divine
When all the things you are are mine

The dearest things I know are what you are
Someday my happy arms will hold you

And someday I'll know that moment divine
When all the things you are are mine

My goodness, Sarah, I have not listened to you in a long time and I got such a thrill. I saw her last concert in Toronto in the 80s. She was old and had to sit a great deal but her artistry remained consummate.

She does this wonderful song all the justice it deserves, and me goosebumps.

Linda! Parece que cada interpretação dessa musica fica melhor ainda. Das versões que já ouvi todas são maravilhosas, parabéns Jerome Kern e Oscar Hammerstein II por essa jóia da canção.

Sarah Vaughan -- my 'new favorite' version of my Mom and Dad's favorite song (mine too) Kern & Hammerstein's masterpiece. So, how did I manage to miss Sarah Vaughan's magnificent rendition? Playing as I typed this on Siriusly Sinatra satellite radio.
Terrific orchestration (wonder who?) and Sarah's breath control rivals Sinatra's. She goes for the high note at the end. Pure and clear, operatic quality!

My favorite reviewer at Amazon (retired English prof and pro jazz pianist) SAMUEL CHELL responded to the above with his usual blend of erudition and provocation:

She was so good if not incomparable that it's all too easy to take her for granted-like Oscar's playing. Plus some jazz followers don't like strings. (Their loss.). She was Ms. Autotune but also the most competent actor--changing personae and meanings on a single note. Notice the little bit of burlesqueing (last chorus) when she senses the lyric is overboard, touching on the maudlin. - She makes the voices of Ella and Carmen sound thin.
