Autumn in New York
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Autumn in New York
Why does it seem so inviting?
Autumn in New York
It spells the thrill of first-nighting

Glittering crowds and shimmering clouds
In canyons of steel
They're making me feel
I'm home

It's autumn in New York
That brings the promise of new love
Autumn in New York
Is often mingled with pain

Dreamers with empty hands
They sigh for exotic lands
It's autumn in New York
It's good to live it again

Autumn in New York
The gleaming rooftops at sundown
Oh, autumn in New York
It lifts you up when you run down

Yes, jaded roues and gay divorcees
Who lunch at the ritz
Will tell you that it's divine

This autumn in New York
Transforms the slums into Mayfair
Oh, autumn in New York
You'll need no castles in Spain

Yes, lovers that bless the dark
On the benches in central park
Greet autumn in New York
It's good to live it again

Autumn in New York
That brings the promise of new love
Autumn in New York
Is often mingled with pain

Dreamers with empty hands
They sigh for exotic lands

It's autumn in New York
It's good to live it again

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sarah Vaughan's song "Autumn in New York" capture the essence of the season in the city that never sleeps. The song reflects the feelings of wonder, excitement, and melancholy that autumn evokes, especially in the context of New York City. At the same time, it also captures the hope and promise of new beginnings that this time of year brings.

Throughout the song, the lyrics paint a vivid picture of the cityscape, noting the "canyons of steel" and "gleaming rooftops at sundown." These images speak to the towering skyscrapers and urban landscape that make up New York City. Vaughan also touches on the social scene, describing "jaded roues and gay divorcees" who dine at the Ritz and wax poetic about the season's beauty.

However, the song's focal point is the sense of renewal that autumn brings. The idea of "new love" and fresh starts is a theme throughout the song. The lyrics speak of "dreamers with empty hands" who long for "exotic lands," suggesting a yearning for something more meaningful. Yet, in the end, the song celebrates the simple pleasures of the season, such as sitting on a bench in Central Park with a lover under the autumnal leaves.

Overall, "Autumn in New York" is a song that captures both the vibrancy and melancholy of life in the city. Its lyrics evoke the bittersweet feelings of the season while reminding us of the beauty of the simpler things in life.

In my opinion, this is the best version of this song I've ever heard. Incomparable!

james johnston

I've always known but overlooked Sarah, but after hearing this on an autumn night early in October, how can I ever forget her, now? I was in that canyon of steel? Could see the sepia toned skyscrapers, and the rustling leaves; the browns, golds and yellow tones, just at dusk...

Psi Lo

Adrian, I agree, but also believe that Ella and Louis truly swung this song into the Universe and forever, together. I'm sure you're well aware, peace be with you.

Jule Phillips

@james johnston Oh my gosh, I feel the same way when I hear her! It's like being transported to a beautiful fall day in NYC. She alone makes me feel that way!!

Escott Hiley

This has been in my music collection for years. Beautiful arrangement and what a performance by Sarah. The bit at 2:20 when she comes back in after the instrumental still knocks me out.

This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life. Sarah Vaughan was one truly amazing and talented songstress. Not sure if anyone caught on, but if you listen and follow along with the lyrics, you'll notice there was a whole part, along with a couple of other lines that were not included in Sarah's version of this song. Still amazing though.

+DJ James Thanks for catching that DJ James, I usually edit the lyrics but I missed this one totally.

Well, said, I just am so enamored with this time period of music and the REAL talent that was expressed through great music and presentation. I have been a Sarah fan forever and will remain..eternally..I like Frank and Billie, but Vaughn is the tops , in my my book way over ELLA!. Nin Simone comes in second...aaaaaaahhhhh...Love her too

Just sublime. Please include Jo Stafford's version as well. Different approach to the song but still an amazing performance.
