Experience Unnecessary
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I want a man to hold me tight
I want a man to kiss goodnight
If he's young and free, just send him to me
Experience unnecessary

I want a man with lots of charm
I want a man, no false alarm
The kind of guy who kiss my tears when I cry
Experience unnecessary

If he is big and strong and willing to learn
There are such thrills in store
And when the lights are dim and I'm close to him
I'll teach him what my lips are for

I want a man around the house
I want a man not just a mouse
We'll spend a cozy life as husband and wife
Experience unnecessary

If he is big and strong and willing to learn
There are such thrills in store

And when the lights are dim and I'm close to him
I'll teach him what my lips are for

Overall Meaning

The song ‘Experience Unnecessary’ by Sarah Vaughan, is a playful and cheeky number in which she outlines her requirements for the perfect man. She is looking for a partner who is big, strong and willing to learn, as the most important thing is the connection between them rather than any past experience or qualifications. Sarah wants someone who is charming, kind and can hold her tight, kiss her goodnight, and be there for her when she is sad, someone she can rely on.

The lyrics also suggest that Sarah is looking for a traditional kind of partner; she wants someone who will be around the house and who will stay loyal to her as a husband. She desires a cozy life with someone who is ready to learn all about her, with whom she can teach the language of love. The song is about looking for love, a warm and tender connection between two people, something that can be equally enjoyable and rewarding, whether you have experience or not.

Overall, ‘Experience Unnecessary’ is a light, fun and flirty song about the essence of love and relationships, which we can all relate to, regardless of our experience.

Trombonology Erstwhile

In lesser hands -- or, rather, vocal cords -- this endeavor could have been insufferable, like so many coy pop vocal records from the Singer's Era, which followed the Big Band Era and predated (although with some overlap) the dawn of Rock & Roll. Sarah was so much better than the pop material for the singles market she was so often called upon to interpret in this period -- only her phenomenal voice and artistry made this not fully cooked fare palatable.
