Green Dolphin Street
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It seems like a dream, yet I know it happened
A man, a maid, a kiss, and then goodbye
Romance was the theme
And we were the players
I never think of this without a sigh

Lover, one lovely day
Love came, planning to stay
Green Dolphin Street supplied the setting
The setting for nights beyond forgetting
And through these moments apart memories live in my heart
When I recall the love I found on
I could kiss the ground on Green Dolphin Street

Lover, one lovely day
Love came, planning to stay
Green Dolphin Street supplied the setting
The setting for nights beyond forgetting
And through these moments apart memories live in my heart

When I recall the love I found on
On Green Dolphin Street

Overall Meaning

The song "Green Dolphin Street" by Sarah Vaughan is a beautiful love song that tells the story of a young couple who experienced romance in its purest form. The lyrics describe the moments of their love, from the beginning till the end, and the memories that still live in the singer's heart. The opening line, "It seems like a dream, yet I know it happened," perfectly captures the mood of the song, which is nostalgic and bittersweet.

The song is composed in a way that captures the listener's attention from the very start. The first stanza talks about a man and a maid who share a kiss and then say goodbye, and the second stanza goes on to describe the setting that made the love possible. Green Dolphin Street becomes an important character in the song, representing the place where the magic happened. The third stanza talks of how memories of those moments live in the singer's heart, and how the love found on Green Dolphin Street still brings a sigh of regret.

The best verion of this song I have ever heard. Sass resisted the tempetation to become too sassy thus keeping the integrity of the song. Great job. Thanks for posting. Torme tore this up also.

You have to hear Patti Austin's "Street Of Dreams"! From the 1999 alvbum of the same name. Updated to these times but playfully, musically an ode to a different day. :) I've heard Sarah (my soul!) & Rosie Clooney do the song, among others but it's not an easy tune for vocalists to GET mentally to deliver effectively. Patti's version is the best I've heard so far.
