Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Dah, dah, dah, dah
Dah, dah, dah, dah, dah, dah, dah
Dah, dah, dah, dah
Dah, dah, dah, dah, dah, dah, dah
Dah, dah, dah
Rockets, moon shots
Spend it on the have nots
Money, we make it
Fore we see it you take it
Oh, make you wanna holler
The way they do my life
Make me wanna holler
The way they do my life
This ain't livin', this ain't livin'
No, no baby, this ain't livin'
No, no, no
Inflation no chance
To increase finance
Bills pile up sky high
Send that boy off to die
Make me wanna holler
The way they do my life
Make me wanna holler
The way they do my life
Dah, dah, dah
Dah, dah, dah
Hang ups, let downs
Bad breaks, set backs
Natural fact is
I can't pay my taxes
Oh, make me wanna holler
And throw up both my hands
Yea, it makes me wanna holler
And throw up both my hands
Crime is increasing
Trigger happy policing
Panic is spreading
God know where we're heading
Oh, make me wanna holler
They don't understand
Dah, dah, dah
Dah, dah, dah
Dah, dah, dah

Mother, mother
Everybody thinks we're wrong

Who are they to judge us
Simply cause we wear our hair long

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sarah Vaughan's "Inner City Blues" paint a bleak picture of the realities faced by Black people living in inner cities during the 1970s. The opening lines of the song, "Rockets, moon shots, Spend it on the have nots, Money, we make it, Fore we see it you take it" allude to the high-profile space race of the era and the growing economic divide between the rich and poor. The lyrics go on to address issues such as inflation, the inability to make ends meet, and the conscription of young Black men into the Vietnam War.

The chorus of the song--"Make me wanna holler, The way they do my life, Make me wanna holler, This ain't livin', this ain't livin', No, no baby, this ain't livin', No, no, no"--expresses frustration with the systemic injustices and poverty stricken condition of many Black Americans living in the inner city. The song also touches on the issue of police brutality and the fear and panic that grip many impoverished communities.

Normally it's sacrilegious for another artist to cover anything from 'What's Going On' but this is La Davina and she can do what she likes when she likes and however she likes. Brilliant interpretation of Marv's classic.

you are right but somehow, i can't help thinking she might not do as well here as, Shaka Khan when she sang "What's Going On" with The Funk Brothers ... just a thought ... mabe i'm totally wrong ... but it looks kinda strange how she seem like not wanting to play the 16th notes on this musical arrangement. Some might even say "But why don't she mess with da MF 16th notes on dis ?, SHE can do da scat thang !" ... again : mabe i'm totally wrong in my feel. EDIT : i'm listening to the track again and goodness ... the drumer has such a cool drive on the HiHat + Ride ...

Marvin Classic given a fine work out by Sarah Vaughan, "A Time In My Life" brought the legendary icon firmly in to the 70's as a relevant artist whose career soared to new heights...Sarah played famous The Troubadour when this great album came out and she was off and running...

What a record. Sublime.....This was played on Lyric FM in Ireland last night..... had to pull the car over to listen properly. (Cheers to John Kelly and the Mystery Train)

I lived in Ireland from the late 90s to early 00s and used to love the River of Soul on Sundays with Carl Tsigidonis, or whatever the spelling was, on the car radio driving back from relatives in Adrigole to Leap. I'll look out for Mystery Train now via the net.
