Isn
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why did I wander here and there and yonder
Wasting precious time for no reason or rhyme?
Isn't it a pity? Isn't it a crime?
My journey's ended, everything is splendid
Meeting you today
Has given me a wonderful idea - here I stay
(Melody:) it's a funny thing -
I look at you, I get a thrill I never knew
Isn't it a pity we never met before?
Here we are at last - it's like a dream
The two of us a perfect team
Isn't it a pity we never met before?

Imagine all the lonely years we've wasted
You with the neighbors, I at silly labors -
What joys untasted
You reading Heine, me somewhere in China
Let's forget the past
Let's both agree that I'm for
You and you're for me
And it's such a pity we never
Never met before

Imagine all the lonely year's we've wasted
Fishing for salmon, losing at backgammon
What joys untasted
My nights were sour spent with Schopenhauer
Let's forget the past
Let's both agree that I'm for
You and you're for me

And it's such a pity we never
Never met before

Overall Meaning

The songs start with a scene of a frightening weather marked by thunder and lightning. However, the singer is not frightened by the conditions despite its severity. Instead, the singer defines the day as ‘lovely.’ This shows the power of human perception and the singer’s ability to find beauty in a seemingly sad situation. The singer believes that the bad weather and its imminent changes will bring people together, which the singer welcomes. The lyrics highlight that the singer's positive attitude towards the situation is heavily reliant on her companion's presence. Throughout the song, the singer refers to the person's presence and the impact it has on the day. The singer even highlights that staying with the person is all that matters.

In the second verse, the song title is introduced, and the singer expresses their love for being caught up in a storm with their companion. The singer frames the gloomy and rainy situation positively as they make the best of the circumstances, and the sun comes out to signify a change of luck. With the appearance of the sun, the singer believes that they could be cozy and warm even within the storm's misery. Through this, the singer seems to portray their desire to be with their companion in difficult situations. The singer acknowledges and enjoys their partner's presence, which makes the weather conditions and the world seem so beautiful.

Great to have this performance from the legendary Sarah Vaughan. Another legend, Dinah Washington, apparently never appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show. Thanks for posting.

@Playbyplaymedia On the ed sullivan musical guess appearance she was listed along with ella .sarah. Della. Lena and many more. On a personal note an old lady friend told me (a long time ago) she saw her on ed sullivan. I TOO thought she didn't appear and friend gave the look " I KNOW WHAT I SAW!!!" I didn't argue with her. Hopefully I will find the info and let you know. I KNOW FOR A FACT DINAH APPEARED ON AMERICAN BANDSTAND IN 1962 SINGING FOR ALL WE KNOW.
