Jive Samba
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, we call it a samba
With that same beat that them Brazilians use
Well, we call it a samba but not really
It's just the down home blues

Well, we call it a samba

It's a jive but it's a samba, samba, samba
Mmm

Well, we call it a samba, samba

It's a jive but it's a samba, a samba

It's a jive but it's a samba, a samba
A samba yes, it's a samba, samba

Yes, I said a samba mmm, mmm, mmm, a samba
Yes, yes, yes, a, a samba a jive samba

Overall Meaning

In the song "Jive Samba" by Sarah Vaughan, the lyrics speak to the fusion of musical styles and the attempt to categorize a unique sound. The opening lines suggest that the song is called a samba, referencing the Brazilian musical genre known for its lively rhythms. However, the lyrics continue to state that it's not truly a samba but instead a combination of the down home blues and the jive. This highlights the blending of different musical styles, resulting in a new and distinct sound.

The repetition of the phrase "It's a jive but it's a samba" further emphasizes the contradiction and fusion of styles, reinforcing the notion that the song cannot be easily categorized. It captures the energy and spirit of both the jive, a form of swing dance, and the samba, a popular Brazilian dance style, creating a vibrant and dynamic sound.

Overall, the lyrics of "Jive Samba" suggest that music can transcend boundaries and categories, showcasing the beauty and power of cultural fusion and expression.

One of the low points of the album. Before recording, didn't anyone listen to the original Riverside recording with Cannon and Nat? Like their other big hits--"Sack o' Woe," "This Here," "Gemini," etc.--this one worked because of the build-up of a slower tempo climaxing in stop-time breaks for either brother. But this arrangement settles on a work-out for mechanical mambo players.
