Lover Man
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't know why but I'm feeling so sad
I long to try something I've never had
Never had no kissin'
Oh, what I've been missin'
Lover man, oh, where can you be?

The night is so cold and I'm so alone
I'd give my soul just to call you my own
Got a moon above me
But no one to love me
Lover man, oh, where can you be?

I've heard it said
That the thrill of romance
Can be like a heavenly dream
I go to bed with a prayer
That you'll make love to me
Strange as it seems

Someday we'll meet
And you'll dry all my tears
And whisper sweet
Little things in my ear
A-hugging and a-kissing
Ooh, what we've been missing
Lover man, oh, where can you be?

Lover man, where can
You be

Overall Meaning

The song "Lover Man" by Sarah Vaughan expresses the feelings of a woman who is lonely and yearning for love. The opening lines, "I don't know why but I'm feeling so sad, I long to try something I've never had" signify her longing for something new and exciting in her life. She is willing to try a new experience, hence, her plea for a lover man. Sarah's emotive voice goes on to express her desire for someone to care for her, hold her, and make her feel loved. The lyrics "Never had no kissin', oh, what I've been missin'" poignantly capture her lack of intimacy.

The next verse "The night is so cold and I'm so alone, I'd give my soul just to call you my own, got a moon above me but no one to love me, lover man, oh, where can you be?" conveys the singer's despair and loneliness. Despite the world being in motion and the moon shining bright, she is unable to find love. As she goes to bed, she dreams of experiencing the romance she's yearning for, represented in the line "I go to bed with a prayer that you'll make love to me, strange as it seems." The song ends with Sarah's roaring voice making a confident assertion that someday she will find her lover man who will comfort her and fill her life with pleasure.

Her voice is priceless. Like she is singing to herself. The unsurpassed Mrs. Sarah Vaughan!

Nice observation

@christianharbin7979

Her speaking voice was so trebled. So when she projected her whole voice, it's this enveloping affect that just takes over your body. It's rich, full, feminine, sultry, sexy and has me feeling all types of ways at once. It almost catches you off guard.

@amacallan9
