Night Song
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh summer, not a bit of breeze
Neon signs are shining through the tired trees
Lovers walking to and fro
Everyone has someone and a place to go

Listen, hear the cars come, pass
They don't even see me flying by so fast
They're moving, going who knows where
Only thing I know is I am not going there

Where do you go
When you feel that your brain is on fire
Where do you go
When you don't even know what it is you desire

Listen, laughter everywhere
Hear it, life is in the air
As the night comes and the town awakes
Sound of children calling
And the squeal of brakes

Music but a lonely song
When you can't help wondering
Where do I belong

When you can't help wondering
Where do I belong

Overall Meaning

Sarah Vaughan's song "Night Song" captures a moment in time where the singer finds herself in the midst of a bustling summer night, yet feeling disconnected and out of place. The first two lines immediately set the mood of the stagnant, humid evening with no movement but from the neon signage that glistens through the tired trees. We see glimpses of happy couples strolling around her, their comfortable pace juxtaposed to her frenzied, fast movements. The contrast becomes more apparent as she speaks of hearing the cars pass; it’s almost as if she is outside of spatiality and time itself, a witness of the world turning without her. The sense of disconnection culminates in the chorus, where the singer feels lost and disconnected from her own desires and purpose.

The music and imagery is hauntingly melancholic as it brings forth the feelings of alienation, fear and hopelessness that one can experience in their search for belonging. As she hears the sounds of life all around her, she can’t help but wonder where she belongs. "Night Song" captures the essence of the human spirit, our never-ending struggle to find a place where we feel we are at home. The song draws out the universal human experience of loneliness and introspection by speaking of the clash between the vivacity of the city and the yearning of the human soul.
