On Green Dolphin Street
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It seems like a dream, yet I know it happened
A man, a maid, a kiss, and then goodbye
Romance was the theme
And we were the players
I never think of this without a sigh

Lover, one lovely day
Love came, planning to stay
Green Dolphin Street supplied the setting
The setting for nights beyond forgetting
And through these moments apart memories live in my heart
When I recall the love I found on
I could kiss the ground on Green Dolphin Street

Lover, one lovely day
Love came, planning to stay
Green Dolphin Street supplied the setting
The setting for nights beyond forgetting
And through these moments apart memories live in my heart

When I recall the love I found on
On Green Dolphin Street

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the song "On Green Dolphin Street" by Sarah Vaughan describe a romantic encounter that took place on a street named Green Dolphin Street. The song's lyrics evoke a feeling of nostalgia and longing for a past romance that the singer remembers fondly. The opening lyrics "It seems like a dream, yet I know it happened" suggest that the singer is struggling to come to terms with the fact that her romance on Green Dolphin Street is now only a memory.

As the song progresses, the lyrics become more wistful as the singer reminisces about the love she found on Green Dolphin Street. The lyrics describe the setting as being "beyond forgetting". This suggests that the experience of falling in love on Green Dolphin Street was so powerful and profound that it has stayed with the singer even though the romance is now over. The singer's sense of loss is palpable, especially in the closing lines of the song, where she imagines kissing the ground on Green Dolphin Street, a symbol of her desire to return to the moment when she experienced true love.

Overall, the lyrics to "On Green Dolphin Street" by Sarah Vaughan are a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of love and the lasting impact that it can have on our lives.

You have to hear Patti Austin's "Street Of Dreams"! From the 1999 alvbum of the same name. Updated to these times but playfully, musically an ode to a different day. :) I've heard Sarah (my soul!) & Rosie Clooney do the song, among others but it's not an easy tune for vocalists to GET mentally to deliver effectively. Patti's version is the best I've heard so far.
