Shulie A Bop
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

SHULIE A BOP

Savagely beguiled of courage
Not equipped for determination
Needed for your journey
Not sure if you were
Thrown in or shit out
The way you see it is the way it is

Maybe not the way it´s supposed to be
A beginning for other solutions
Led to the same place to find
The bad in the bad
And the bad in the good

Either way
Whatever could go wrong does go wrong
Ending up right back
Where you began

The great escape

Sensory multiload
Overstate the obvious
That your situations
Remain in focus never to vanish

Soar and envision sore vision

Trippin´ at the helm
The illusion of utopia
Wanting more and more
And then you´ll beg

Soar and envision sore vision

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sarah Vaughan's song "Shulie a Bop" seem to explore the complexities of life and its challenges, particularly in relation to the journey of an individual. The opening lines, "Savagely beguiled of courage, not equipped for determination," suggest that the journey is not an easy one, and that at times it may seem like one is not capable of facing the challenges that lie ahead. The line "Thrown in or shit out" further highlights this sense of helplessness and uncertainty, as one may feel like they are not in control of their own journey and are simply at the mercy of external forces.

The lyrics then delve into the idea that there may be different solutions to the obstacles one faces, but ultimately, they may all lead to the same place where one is forced to confront the "bad" in both themselves and the world around them. The line "Either way, whatever could go wrong does go wrong" highlights the inevitability of challenges and difficulties, and that despite one's best efforts, things may not always go according to plan. The final lines, "The great escape, sensory multiload, overstate the obvious," suggest that perhaps the only way to cope with the difficulties of life is to escape, to detach oneself from it, and to focus on the obvious and tangible things in front of them.

Overall, the lyrics of "Shulie a Bop" seem to speak to the universal human experience of facing challenges and uncertainty in life, and the emotional toll that this can take on an individual. At the same time, there is a sense of resilience and determination, as the lyrics suggest that one must continue to push forward, even when the journey seems impossible.

Classic BeBop. A scat solo worthy of the best horn players. Found this on a Mercury LP compendium of drummers when I was 16 in 1957. Stuck on Jazz, especially BeBop and Hard Bop for life.

Billy Fox

Coolest drum solo of all time. Roy Haynes is perfect on this one!

Howard Jackson

Tremendous. This is the first jazz vocal record I bought.

Great track, especially Roy Haynes solo. Roy took this idea and based his tune "Snap, crackle" on it.  He recorded it twice (at least) - on his Impulse record "Out of the Afternoon" and on trio date for Japanese label Kitty "Sugar Roy" w. Tommy Flanagan and Ron Carter.

Happy Birthday, Roy Haynes   ... I remember this tune when it first came out  ...I was in Little League then  .. I would play this tune over and over again  ... to drown out the yelling going on with our upstairs neighbors.  What a tune and what a wonderful performance by Sarah and Roy and the gang.

when i was a boy back in 1974, my dad had an 8track in his 68 eldorado and left it in for months at a time. i know this scat backwards & forwards. looking back, i'm thankful for the exposure.

If you ever need to answer the question, "What the heck is BeBop?", just let them listen to this a couple times and they will be hooked just as I was at age 16 when i heard this in 1957.

Dadocumentaire !
