Speak Low
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Speak low when you speak, love
Our summer day withers away too soon, too soon
Speak low when you speak, love
Our moment is swift, like ships adrift, we're swept apart, too soon
Speak low, darling, speak low
Love is a spark, lost in the dark too soon, too soon

I feel wherever I go that tomorrow is near
Tomorrow is here and always too soon
Time is so old and love so brief

Love is pure gold and time a thief, time a thief
We're late, darling, we're late
The curtain descends, everything ends too soon, too soon
I wait, darling, I wait
Will you speak low to me, speak love to me and soon
Will you speak low to me, speak love to me, too soon

Will you speak low to me, speak love to me and soon
And soon

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Speak Low" by Sarah Vaughan contain a strong theme of fleeting love and the fragility of human relationships. The song urges the listener to speak softly and cherish the moment, as life and love are both transitory. The repetition of the phrase "too soon" highlights the fleeting nature of love and the inevitability of our own mortality. Vaughan equates love and time to gold and a thief, respectively, emphasizing the rare and precious nature of love, and the ability of time to take it away.

The lyrics also draw comparisons between the impermanence of love and the broader transience of life. The line, "Tomorrow is here and always too soon" reflects the inevitability of the passage of time, and how easily love and life can be lost. The sense of urgency is compounded by the repeated phrase "we're late, darling, we're late", adding a note of desperation to the song.

Habla bajo cuando hables, amor
Speak low when you speak, love

Our summer day withers away too soon, too soon

Habla bajo cuando hables, amor
Speak low when you speak, love

Our moment is swift, like ships adrift, we´re swept apart, too soon
Habla bajo, cariño, habla bajo
Speak low, darling, speak low

Love is a spark, lost in the dark too soon, too soon

I feel wherever I go that tomorrow is

Near, tomorrow is here and always too soon
Time is so old and love so brief

Love is pure gold and time a thief

Llegamos tarde, cariño, llegamos tarde
We´re late, darling, we´re late

The curtain descends, everything ends too soon, too soon
Espero, cariño, espero
I wait, darling, I wait

Will you speak low to me, speak love to me and soon

Sassy was a great vocalist. She was a friend of my Mom, on occasion she was a guest at our home. That era was wonderful, so many beautiful voices and most of them supported each other, my Mom was a vocalist also she would buy Sassy's albums and I would listen to her interpretation of a tune as a child and love the way she worked it. I could try to tell you who I felt was my favorite but each had beautiful expression and style.

jessandjazz7 That’s awesome! I love them all. I am a vocalist and I always go to Sarah or Ella to get the melodic beauty. Ms Washington seemed to have the originality cornered.

@GlowWoification Not Billie?

Sarah Vaughn, a glorious voice at its best in this masterful interpretation of a great song...So moving, pure magic...

Sarah Vaughan can't really be compared to anyone else in jazz. People often lump her, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday into a jazz triumvirate, arguing over who is the best of the three (although, what a disparate trio they make!), but Sarah Vaughan is in her own category. There just isn't anyone else like her.
