Spring Will Be a Little Late This Year
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look at me
I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree
And I feel like I'm clinging to a cloud
I can't understand
I get misty, holding your hand

Walk my way
And a thousand violins begin to play
Or it might be the sound of your hello
That music I hear
I get misty the moment you're near

You can say that you're leading me on
But it's just what I want you to do
Don't you realize how hopelessly I'm lost
That's why I'm following you

On my own
Would I wander through this wonderland alone
Never knowing my right foot from my left
My hat from my glove
I get misty, and too much in love

I'm too misty, and too much in love

Overall Meaning

The song "Spring Will Be a Little Late This Year" performed by Sarah Vaughan is a ballad about a person who is deeply in love and helpless in the presence of their loved one. The opening lines describe the singer's vulnerable state, comparing themselves to a helpless kitten clinging to a tree or a cloud. The singer then goes on to describe how they get misty (overwhelmed with emotion) when holding hands with their loved one. The next verse describes how the simple act of walking towards the singer can create a symphony of violins or even just the sound of their loved one's voice saying hello that makes them feel misty.

The chorus then shifts to the singer expressing their love and desire to follow their loved one, despite knowing that they may be getting led on. The bridge of the song then shifts to the singer wondering what life would be like without their loved one, and how they would be wandering through a "wonderland" alone, feeling misty and far too in love to function.

Overall, the song is a beautiful and haunting depiction of what it feels like to be deeply in love and completely consumed by emotion.

Thanks for sharing this exquisite recording. No affectations in her style, great respect for the Frank Loesser lyric, total musicality. Let's not forget Percy Faith's masterful arrangement. This is as good as it gets!

Who has ever sung this any better than Sarah Vaughan -- whatever she sings is perfect ....

Pitty some of the new generations will never hear of her. Well, some will. She's WAY before my time and... here I am, playing the heck out of her.

If any in our species goes on living and then dies without ever experiencing Sarah's divinity, well then... That will have been because of their own choice, for Sarah is legendary and supremely laced within the dimensional histories of music. One need only search a short distance to discover this truly divine, soul sweeping paragon of expressional goddess femininity.

@Psi Lo Do not miss her album of Brazilian songs - from 1986, believe the title is Brazilian Romance. She does a tune called 'Romance', one of the loveliest songs I have ever heard in my 71 years. I was blest to have two parents who were musicians. My late mom and Dad made sure I was raised on wonderful artists like George Shearing, Chet Baker, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen Mc Rae, on and on. I was born with a good ear, but being exposed to such artistry really gave me an edge when I listened. Still does, to this day! Best from New Orleans..
