When Sunny Gets Blue
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When Sunny gets blue, her eyes get gray and cloudy
Then the rain begins to fall, pitter-patter, pitter-patter
Love is gone; what can matter?
No sweet lover-man comes to call

When Sunny gets blue, she breaths a sigh of sadness
Like the wind that stirs the trees
Wind that sets the leaves to swaying
Like some violin is playing strange and haunting melodies

People used to love to hear her laugh, see her smile
That's how she got her name
Since that sad affair, she lost her smile, changed her style
Somehow she's not the same

When Sunny gets blue, pretty dreams will rise up
Where her other dreams fell through
Hurry, new love, hurry here to kiss away each lonely tear
And hold her near when Sunny gets blue

People used to love to hear her laugh, see her smile
That's how she got her name

Since that sad affair, she lost her smile, changed her style
Somehow she's not the same

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sarah Vaughan's song "When Sunny Gets Blue" explore the aftermath of a lost love and the toll it takes on its subject, Sunny. When Sunny's mood changes, her eyes become "gray and cloudy" and the rain begins to fall. The loss of love is so profound that the presence of a "sweet lover-man" or any semblance of happiness seems diminished. When Sunny breathes "a sigh of sadness," it sets a chain reaction of swaying leaves and haunting melodies that reflects her sorrow.

The impact of losing love is shown to be transformative in Sunny. The absence of love has caused her to lose her smile and change her style, making her almost unrecognizable to those who once knew her best. The only hope for Sunny's melancholic state is the promise of new love. The lyrics hint that Sunny has had her fair share of heartbreak, with some of her previous dreams having "fallen through." However, the potentiality for a new love is what will replace her lost dreams and heal the wounds of her heartbreak.

"When Sunny Gets Blue" is a poignant and emotive song that speaks to the power of lost love and the transformative effects it can have. The haunting melody and lyrics resonate with anyone who has experienced heartbreak and its aftermath. It is a song that has become a jazz classic, with numerous musicians recording their renditions of it over the years.

When Sunny gets blue
Her eyes get gray and cloudy
Then the rain begins to fall
Pitter patter, pitter patter
Love is gone so what can matter
No sweet lovin' man comes to call
When Sunny gets blue
She breathes a sigh of sadness
Like the wind that stirs the trees
Wind that sets the leaves to swayin'
Like some violins are playin'
Weird and haunting melodies
People used to love to
Hear her laugh, see her smile
That's how she got her name
Since that sad affair
She's lost her smile
Changed her style
Somehow she's not the same
But mem'ries will fade
And pretty dreams will rise up
Where her other dreams fell through
Hurry, new love, hurry here
To kiss away each lonely tear
And hold her near when Sunny gets blue
Hurry, new love, hurry here
To kiss away each lonely tear
And hold her near when Sunny gets blue

For the people below - there is no point in comparing Ella and Sarah. Jazz is all about individual interpretation on all levels. they were both masters that i am sure inspired, challenged and complemented each. Two totally different voices. Both amazing and both unique.

I've never been able to figure out why people insist on comparing apples to oranges. They're both awesome in their own way. As you said, jazz is about individual interpretations.

TRUE DAT! Folks don't understand to be a true artist (be it musical or visual art), you must have your own distinctive style. That's what make an artist unique. Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday each has her own "fingerprint" when it came to singing. That is what makes an Artist phenomenal.

You're so right, Laurie! I couldn't agree more!

There is a point. Sarah is way better vocal wise than Ella. Unfortunately for Sass the mass appeal go to Ella.

well said! Exactly as you say!

I've been listening to this track for 40 years and it don't seem a day too long.
I have to mention Barney Kessel's guitar accompaniment which is almost as exquisite as Ms Vaughan's singing. The perfect recording write down to that last sustained controlled note. The engineer must have been holding his breath as it ended :)

Barney's the man.

Ms. Sarah Vaughn, never got her due in my book. Her voice is beyond beautiful. Her vocal cords must be dipped in honey and chocolate. Her style is just awesome. She was poised and classy. Her performances are reflective of an era of entertainers who invested considerable time in preparing for their performances, entertainers who had exceptional vocal abilities. I just love her. Listen....how clear her voice is and how she enunciates her words. May I encourage you to give a listen to her performance with the Bob James Trio. Be mesmerized as she sings, The Shadow of Your Smile. Watch her eyes sparkle like diamonds. What an entertainer. What great music she created. What a voice!!!!!!
