You Go to My Head
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You go to my head and you linger like a haunting refrain
And I find you spinning 'round in my brain
Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne

You go to my head like a sip of sparkling Burgundy brew
And I find the very mention of you
Like the kicker in a julep or two
The thrill of the thought that
You might give a thought to my plea
Cast a spell over me

Still, I say to myself
Get a hold of yourself
Can't you see that it never can be?

You go to my head with a smile that makes my temperature rise
Like a summer with a thousand Julies
You intoxicate my soul with your eyes

Though I'm certain that this heart of mine
Hasn't a ghost of a chance in this crazy romance

You go to my head
You go to

Overall Meaning

The song "You Go to My Head" by Sarah Vaughan is a classic love song which speaks of the power of love over an individual's mind and soul. The lyrics describe a situation where the subject is deeply in love with someone, to the extent that they think about them constantly, even in their dreams. The person is so mesmerized that they feel like they are always surrounded by the thought of this person, like a haunting melody. The person compares this feeling to that of the effervescence of champagne bubbles, which continues to linger and caress their mind.

The song goes on to describe how the person feels when they think of their lover. The very mention of their lover's name brings a sense of excitement and joy like the kicker in a julep. The person wonders if their lover feels even the slightest of mutual affection towards them. The thought of their lover's attention excites them, and they feel like they've been put under a spell.

However, they also acknowledge that they are dreaming, and their love might not ever come to fruition. Despite that, the person admits that their lover has intoxicated them with their beautiful smile and eyes. They are sure that their love might not ever be possible, but the person is nevertheless smitten by the idea of their loved one being the centre of their world. The song thus successfully captures the inexplicable feelings of longing and desire that people feel in the overwhelming presence of love.

I love this song and I especially like this version by Sarah. I have always felt that Sarah didn't get the acclaim she deserved during her career. I believe that she is one of the top Jazz singers of all time. Thanks for posting this recording.

You are completely mistaken. Sarah Vaughan is universally considered to be one of greatest jazz singers of all time. In fact, one of the greatest voices period. Leonard Bernstein once said she could have been a great opera singer had she taken that route. Virtually every post on the songs of any female singers singing jazz references her. She was and is legendary. This is not her best song either. Not even close.

Truth. She gets left behind in the (deserved) afterglow of Ella and Billie, but in my opinion she's just as good. If not better. And a great deal less mannered.
