While working in college radio in 2000, nothing that came across the “for promotion only” desk got me amped like Xpander by Sasha. This track, with all its various versions included on the promo CD, stood out from all the other records, from any genre. I played that song every Friday the whole Spring 2000 semester. I played it so much I was getting prank calls from the music director at the station requesting it (ha ha). I was a freak about it, I’d sometimes open and close with a different version of the song during my 2-hour show. I should have just called myself DJ Xpander. Any ways, this song got me even more excited about electronic music, I started to make my own mixtapes and hand them out to people [now a days no one has a way to play mixtapes on cassette, or even CD, so it’s a culture long gone, with the exception of some music enthusiasts].

I really didn’t know much about Sasha back in the day and was more focused on the sounds than the creators, as he really didn’t come around until after the late-1980s. Influenced by acid house, Sasha, sometimes referred to as DJ Sasha, was born Alexander Paul Coe in Wales, UK, and was a big part of the house music and trance scene in Europe and America. House music uses a lot of heavy bass beats with lots of other sounds going in and out throughout the songs. Like many electronic artists over the past 20 years, Sasha is a DJ, producer, and a host of events. Drawing crowds from all over the world.

This song is a great combination of house and trance with some moments of the bass dropping out to allow for some transitions. The song starts out very melodramatic on some versions and builds up slowly and gradually brings into the trance it is intending you to go in. In the original version, the track has the signature house bass beat tying together all the other elements. Some moments feel a lot like some tracks off the 1970s album The Wall by Pink Floyd, which is another reason I love this track, with the continues high-hat rhythm. Being a drummer, I always listen for new ways to combine beats, sounds, and rhyme combinations that I can translate to my set drum kit. The truth is, I’m a futurist at heart, and love hearing new discoveries in sound design.

I’ve watched electronic music get its start in the late 1970s and evolve from the urban rhythms and European club sounds to wild and magical experiences in sound. I love hearing new ways to manipulate sound waves and computer-generated audio. Africa Bambaataa was one of my first favorite producers that blended danceable beats with rap lyrics in his futuristic. Disco wasn’t my thing, but some great songs came from that genre. I like Techno, Dubstep, and Trance mostly. Some other producers that I love are Paul Hardcastle, Moby, Tiesto and Timbaland. I am excited about the future of electronic music.

Nothing reaches the heights of genius in Xpander, there's many that come close but Xpander is timeless. Originally this track would be nearly a minute longer but due to it being pitched up by around 8% in this video it ends sooner. Personally I think it benefits being played at it's original or minus pitch speed, normally I'm the opposite inclined but this track is different!

Man, this track. This is the one that really introduced me to Trance - my mom knew some of the peeps at Club Rubber and got a custom CD way back then and gave it to me, and this track was on it (alongside other classics like Gouryella), and since then has been my favorite trance track. Lost track of it for about 12 years but never forgot the sounds, only the name - until about a year back. Was amazing hearing it again.

Been really into Synth and Retro Wave for years and you can get a gist of how those tracks work almost across the board - the tempos they use and the transitions during certain points and so forth, all the intricacies are clear enough to be defined. Even the album track lists and their order tell a story, almost like a movie soundtrack with the beginning intros/openings hyping things up, then the middle where things dial down for the conflict and melancholy, to the second winds and hype of victory to the outro. Carpenter Brut, Fixions, Perturbator, etc. all of them follow this.

I still can't figure out how the hell Sasha came up with Xpander. The tempo is basic enough, but the rest of the sounds make me nostalgic for a time I didn't even live in, past and future - it's like traveling through a wormhole with breaches where you see bits of history pass before your eyes, from eras and worlds you've never visited yet still gain knowledge and memories upon seeing them somehow. When the strings at 4:01 kick in alongside the already unique strings that were weaving through the track, and then the beat picks back up again at 4:29 with all of it leading into the slow fade-in of the spacey strings at around 4:52, which slows it all back down again by 5:11- 5:25 ... that whole section, the 80's like strings that remind me of the Lost Boys for some reason (has vibes similar to Cry Little Sister's chorus maybe? I have no idea) mixed with the familiar spacey vibes of synth wave... this shit is gorgeous. Very unique and powerful composition.

I went to Drumcode Halloween part in London, November 2014, and at the after party Max Cooper played this. I was sitting in the bar area with friends having a sit down before the madness continued, and I heard the very start of this, leaped up and ran in to the room. I couldn't believe someone was playing it. I've been listening to this song for many years, as a teenager, but never ever thought I'd ever hear it when out. It was, funnily, one of the best moments of that whole weekend, and one of my best clubbing moments in the last 10 years

I called my brother in Norway and said something like Sasha just dropped a tune that is like Virus Sun, but so so much better... and it still stands that way. I was lucky enough to be at the front of one of the podiums in SPACE in Ibiza in the late 90's for the night of Sasha's actual birthday party. He came on and played this and the whole place went mental - It was a religious experience and something I will never forget. Sasha was later apparently found horizontal in the car park near Bora Bora - what a guy !

This track changes three times - it's like three songs with the same beat at the bottom. I like the first part the best actually.
