Trial By Fire
Satan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In 1945 the year it came to be
Their fate decided
Many miles accross the sea
They told them not to fear
They couldn't be prepaired
Then came the day
That not a single soul was spared
Too late there's no escape
The Trial has begun
Down they fly
From out of the sky
Feel the radiation burn

The men of power
Had nothing to fear
When the finger hits the switch
They're far away from here
Down in their sanctuary
Hidding in their lair
The sorcerers of justice
Will be waiting for them there

Too late there's no escape
The Trial has begun
Down they fly
From out of the sky
Feel the radiation burn

I saw the people running
Through all my dreams
I heard the soldiers crying
Mother Nature screams
I saw destruction falling
From out of the sky
I heard the Wise Man calling... Why?

In 1945 the year it came to be
Their fate decided
Many miles accross the sea
They told them not to fear
They couldn't be prepaired
Then came the day
That not a single soul was spared.

Too late there's no escape
The Trial has begun
Down they fly

From out of the sky
Feel the radiation burn

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Trial by Fire" by Satan tell the story of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II, which took place in 1945. The opening lines of the song refer to the year of the bombing and the fate that was decided for those who were caught in the attacks. The lyrics then go on to describe how the people were told not to be afraid, but they were not adequately prepared for the devastating effects of the bomb. The chorus of the song emphasizes the hopelessness of the situation, with lyrics like "Too late there's no escape" and "Feel the radiation burn."

The second verse of the song shifts to focus on those who were responsible for the bombings - the "men of power" who were far away from the destruction they caused. The lyrics describe them as "sorcerers of justice" who will be held accountable for their actions. The final section of the song describes the aftermath of the bombings, with scenes of people running, soldiers crying, and nature itself screaming. The "Wise Man" referred to in the lyrics is likely a reference to philosopher Albert Einstein, who signed a letter to President Roosevelt urging him to develop a nuclear weapon.

Overall, "Trial by Fire" is a powerful condemnation of the use of atomic weapons during wartime. It portrays the bombings as a horrific tragedy that left no one untouched, and questions the morality of those who made the decision to use such destructive force.
